  3. Plan • There will be a designated candidate • They work through the case • Then you will give a tutorial about the topic • Might get to practice a skill • Might discuss a difficult topic

  4. 2 Cases • Detailed instructions provided • Resources – readings, videos suggested dialogue • Not prescriptive!

  5. Timing • 1 min reading for candidate registrar • 8 min exam style case • 21 min tutorial/discussion • Total 30 mins per case • 3 cases = 90mins • 2 rotations = 3 hrs • 3/4 registrars per group

  6. Format 2013 Both Cases run in the order of: • Case 1 • Viva • Case 2 Medico-legal & Public Health

  7. Case: Medico Legal • Case 1 Actor is drug seeking. Take a history. • Viva is about dealing with abusive patients & Drs rights in Dr /Patient relationship • Case 2 Same patient now with SBE. Perform CVS exam. Explores difficult patient with serious disease

  8. Case: Public Health Maniquin and 2 facilitators. • Case 1 6 week infant with pertussis causing apnoea. Case about examining a baby with apnoea • Viva Treatment, Contacts, Prevention • Case 2 Chronic cough in child. Exam, Inx,differential diagnosis.

  9. Rationale • Allows exam style practice as usual • Allows time to explore better ways of performing a skill like history or exam • Allows opportunity to practice a skill • More opportunity to learn good practice rather than just get feed back for exams.

  10. For Facilitator • Learning objectives • The case • Resources for tutorial – table of red flags and yellow flags, diagnostic features • References for further reading if desired

  11. Actors For medico legal case: • Brief before and agree how case will play out. Nb she will storm out in case 1 no matter how the Doctor handles her. • You will need a signal for this • Use Actor as a resource during tutorial • During viva Actor puts on SBE make up • CVS exam – explain, check sensitivities

  12. Note • This is small group learning. • You don’t have to exactly follow my notes if something important comes up • There might be extra suggested material if you need it • It is important to stick to 30 mins per case
