  3. Commitment- is a pledge or a promise At some point in their lives the majority of adult Americans will decide to marry Marriage- is a serious, long term commitment Marriage and parenthood

  4. Most people decide to marry because they are in love. Marriage involves more than just love however Getting married shows that two people have made a commitment to live together and care for each other for the rest of their lives Reasons for marrying

  5. Stable Environment to Raise Children Companionship and comfort marriage brings Religious Beliefs Some Financial benefits Reasons con’t

  6. One of the most important factors is emotional maturity Emotionally mature people try to understand their partners needs and are willing to make necessary adjustments Adjustments- An adaptation or change in behavior Factors Affecting Marriage

  7. Good Communication- As with any other relationship, communication is vital. Couples need to share their feelings, needs and concerns Similar Values- Sharing values such as the importance of good health, religious beliefs, cultural pride, family and friendships, a couple is more likely to stay together if they hold the same values Other Factors that help marriage succeed

  8. Realistic Expectations- Issues involving such things as money, children, and where to live can cause disagreements in a marriage. Solving problems and compromising makes marriages work Similar Interests- Sharing interests such as physical activity, nutrition, and travel can help a couple spend more time together. This, inturn, can strengthen the bond of marriage Still more factors

  9. Even the strongest marriage occasionally has problems No married couple will ever agree on every issue There is a difference, however, between couples who sometimes disagree on minor issues, and those who continually disagree on major issues Problems in a marriage

More than 60% of teen marriages end in divorce within 5 years The main reason so many teen marriages fail is that the two people are usually too young to understand what is important to them Caring for a baby is a serious responsibility. It puts a great deal of stress on a teen marriage that may have already been fragile Teen Marriages

  12. Parenthood can be a wonderful experience and most parents find great joy in loving and caring for a child Parenting- the process of meeting a child’s physical, mental/emotional, and social needs Choosing parenthood

  13. Parents are responsible for their helping children become happy, productive, and caring individuals patience, understanding, and sense of humor. Unconditional Love- love without limit or qualification Responsibilities of parenthood

  14. In other words the child is loved regardless if they are good or bad, happy or cranky, healthy or sick A child who receives unconditional love is more likely to grow into a caring well-adjusted adult Responsibilities Continued

  15. Each year in the United States, more than ½ million babies are born to teen mothers About 79% of these teen mothers are not married Most of these teens, however, don’t realize how demanding a baby can be Teen parenthood

  16. Teen pregnancy and parenthood create health risks for both the young mother and baby • Many pregnant teens: • Do not get adequate nutrients • Do not know how to take care of themselves during pregnancy • Receive inadequate pre-natal care Health Risks of teen parenthood

  18. Financial Problems- Raising a child costs a great deal of money. In the first year alone, parents need to buy thousands of dollars worth of baby clothes, food, and supplies. Most teen parents have difficulty meeting even minimal expenses Outcomes

  19. Effects on Education and Career Plans- Teen parents often must put aside their plans for education and a fulfilling career. They may have to quit school to care for their child or to earn money to support their child. Teens without a high school diploma have limited career choices and little chance of getting a well-paying job Outcomes

  20. Emotional Stress- During adolescence, teens struggle to discover who they are and where they fit in. Coping with the normal anxieties of adolescence is challenging enough for many teens. Adding the responsibility of caring for a baby creates even more stress Outcomes

  21. Effects on a Personal and Social Life- Parenting is a time-consuming responsibility, teens will have less time to spend with friends, or they may be too tired for social activities. Many teen parents begin to resent their limited personal freedom Outcomes
