Best Practices – Crisis Hotline • Handling calls on the Crisis Centre Hotline • Screening potential shelter clients • screening checklist • contact Shelter re: space availability/suitability/travel • helping the client move from screening to entry • can the caller leave immediately/soon? • is the perpetrator in the environs of the caller? • Assisting suicidal clients • Referring hotline callers to specific services

Best Practices – Crisis Centre:1 • Free confidential counselling services by Counselling Psychologist • Short-term therapy for victims of rape, sexual, physical & psychological abuse • Couples counselling • Group counselling – adults and children • Assessment centre for women wishing to enter the shelter • Provides urgent crisis intervention services

Best Practices: Crisis Centre: 2 Gateway to BPW Shelter • Psychological Assessments are done for new clients and ex-clients. • Shelter staff make arrangements with shelter taxi or police. • Police stations used as main pick-up location for clients • Other locations can be used based on sensitive nature of the situation

Best Practices – Crisis Centre: 3 Community outreach • Pre-Release Intervention Programme for Girls • Domestic Violence Intervention for mothers and pregnant women at Polyclinics • Domestic violence sensitivity programmes prosecutors, lawyers, social workers, health professionals and law enforcement officers, social workers • Speaker Bureau: • Domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault and women’s empowerment to churches or any community base groups

Best Practices - BPW Shelter for Abused Women • Emergency temporary housing for approx. 25 women and children in 4 suites consisting of kitchen, living space and bedrooms. • Orientation of clients • Group meetings • Domestic Violence , Life/Living Skills, etc • Counselling services for adults and children • Case Management/Crisis Intervention • Children programmes • Post- shelter group
