  3. stereotype • -A stereotype is a thought that may be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things. • -To believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same • -Over generalized belief

Negative stereotypes • All blond women are “spacey” • Girls are only concerned about physical appearance • Guys are messy and unclean • Men who spend too much time on the computer or read are geeks • All librarians are women who are old, wear glasses, tie a high bun, and have a perpetual frown on their face • Girls are not good at sports • All teenagers are rebels • All children don't enjoy healthy food • Only skinny women can become models

  5. Every race, culture, country, religion and a community has a stereotype. It is a way of oversimplifying groups of people. It is one of the easiest ways of establishing identity. By conforming to a fixed or conventional image, the identity can be recognized and understood. And, herein lies the problem: It's hard to be objective if one doesn't reject stereotypes. So, it is better not to use any stereotype and pass judgments only when you are familiar with others.

Scenarios: What would you do? • -Each group will receive a case study involving issues of gender roles • -Work together with your group members to resolve the case study • -Prepare to present your solution to the rest of the class • -10 minutes to complete assignment • -When presenting, others can challenge your solution while you defend it

Discussion questions • -Is it easy or hard to look at male and female roles in a new and nontraditional way? • -How do men or women accept changes in traditional gender roles? • -What are some of the ways changing gender roles have affected relationships between men and women in social settings, work place, families. • -Would your parents reach the same or different solutions? • -Which case study was the most difficult? Why? • -If you could make one change in men’s gender roles, what would it be? If you could make one change in women’s gender roles, what would it be?
