  1. Who’s invited? John 1:1-12

  2. Jesus miracles Why study Jesus’ miracles? They witness about who he is Gives us an idea of his character==> fosters trust and love in us They witness about what he does Teaches us what is God’s mission==> necessary to understand what our role is

  3. Miracles in the Gospels Two types of Gospels: Synoptics: Matthiew, Mark, Luke Mainly about miracles / works of power Coming in power of the Kingdom of God John Few stories, long discussions Not miracles but signs==> Few of them (only 6!), but carefully explained

  4. Use of a sign What then is a sign? Points to something beyond itself Reveals a deeper reality A sign gives indication to: Jesus’ identity and character Jesus’ mission and goal

  5. Goal of signs The goal is not knowledge, it is to foster faith Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31) The goal of faith is life. Not future life, present life!

  6. Miracle at Cana (1) Context: Jesus just got baptised John the Baptist witnessed to him Jesus “got” some disciples Cana close to Nazareth (10-15 km) A small village

  7. Miracle at Cana (2) Action: Mary most probably is involved in the wedding==> Jesus, his son, is invited too Jesus shows up with disciples==> this is certainly unexpected! Has at least 5 disciples, probably more==> they are invited too

  8. Miracle at Cana (3) They run short of wine: a serious offense! Shame on the whole family Lawsuits possible Couple may be crippled with depts for years!

  9. Miracle at Cana (4) Mary learns it… Jesus and his disciples may well be the cause for the lack of wine! What does Mary expect? Bring a gift? Send disciple buy some wine somewhere? Leave? Perform a miracle?

  10. Miracle at Cana (5) Jesus answer: What business do we have together? Jesus receives orders only from the Father Ask Mary to mind her own business She does! She is in charge of the servants… She puts them under Jesus’ orders Smart move!

  11. Miracle at Cana (6) Jesus gives meaningless orders The servants obey. Twice! This is remarkable. They overcome business and fear Master of the banquet He is a connoisseur… What will be his response?

  12. Miracle at Cana (7) The unexpected happens:there is abundance of great wine(600-1000 bottles!) The disciples see Jesus’ glory Where? How? No one else saw anything special==> What do we see?

  13. Jesus’ glory: Provision (1) Reveals God’s character God loves to give Is the God you know or picture in your head acts like Jesus at Cana?Do you live with that awareness? Jesus is no killjoy Spirituality is not opposed to celebration True faith always brings Joy

  14. Jesus’ glory: Provision (2) It is a sign of the promised Messianic age On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. (Isaiah 25.6-8)

  15. Jesus’ glory: Provision (3) Jesus moves from guest to host He is not invited, he invites! He provides for everyone Ultimately, he is the bridegroom Jesus is a burden as guest, but the best host ever Are you trying to sustain him, or are you letting him sustain you?

  16. Jesus’ glory If Jesus is the host, what is he inviting us to? To move beyond purification Enter New Creation

  17. Jesus’ glory: Beyond purification The days of ceremonial washing are over Not external rite but internal transformation, purity of heart (see purification of the Temple, Nicodemus, Samaritan women, etc.) Access is freely and fully granted Forgiveness is only the beginning…Move to celebration of communion with God Do you know you are fully welcome?

  18. Jesus’ glory: New Creation (1) John 1.1: In the beginning…==> this is a story of creation Look at the days: A full week 1:29: The next day… 1:35: The next day… 1:43: The next day… 2:1: On the third day…

  19. Jesus’ glory: New Creation (2) New Creation has begun already God is at work making things and people new Happens in the hearts Jews expected it to be sudden and clearly visible Faith is needed to see it==> where is God re-creating you?are we seeing his work around us or do we pay no attention?

  20. Jesus’ glory: New Creation (3) With God, the best always comes last This is characteristic from God and God only You will be surprised at what God will do It fosters hope

  21. Conclusion (1) What is God telling you today? God is generous and provides. He does not want us to worry. He fully reconciled us. Stop worrying about forgiveness and enter in deeper relationship God is in the business to make all things new. Ask for open eyes to see, marvel at it and participate.
