  3. The Common and Scientific Name Common Name: Siberian Musk Deer Scientific Name: Moschus mosciferus

  4. Natural Habitat, and Where it lives? • Found in the mountain area of Northeast Asia. • Most common in Taiga and southern Siberia.

  5. Life History • Adult Musk only weigh 7-17kg. • This animal is a vegetarian. • They have thick fur and is good for walking through deep snow. • They live 10 to 14 years in the wild. • Young wean at 3 to 4 months old and matured by 14 to 15 months old. • Females gestate just over 6 months and produce 1 to 3 offspring. • Reproduction starts in December but some females don’t mate until March. • They are preyed upon by Wolves, Coyotes, bears etc. • They are usually pack animals.

  6. Why is this animal endangered? • Poachers hunt them for the musk gland in them for perfume, then they just leave them there! • There were not many anyway and now they are near extinction.

  7. Population size today? 1970-1980, 100,000 to 120,000. Today almost extinct.

  8. Efforts to save them?? • There are no efforts that are being done to help them from becoming extinct.
