Define giftedness Individuals with outstanding talent who perform, or show the potential for performing, at remarkable high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. These children and youth exhibit high performance capability in intellectual, creative, and/or artistic areas, possess an unusual leadership capacity, or excel in specific academic fields. They require services or activities not ordinarily provided by the schools. Outstanding talents are present in children and youth from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor. U.S. Dept. of Education, Texas Legislature

Foreign Language: • Learns language quickly • Good memory for vocabulary • Curious about languages and culture • Confident in new language Divergent Problem Solvers: • Puts things together/takes things apart • May or may not be intellectually gifted • May have high energy levels • Risk takers • May be demanding, emotional, withdrawn, or overactive at times Gifted Characteristics Evident in Other Areas
Visual & Performing Arts • Abilities in music, band, dance, sculpture, photography, etc. • Enjoy using their talents • May have same attributes as creative individuals • Leadership • Self-confident; usually well liked • Adapts to new situations and settings • Enjoys participation in school, church, community events • Other students seek ideas from them
Remember: Generally accepted characteristics of the gifted • Advanced ability to manipulate symbols in reading, with numbers, in music • Large storehouse of facts; rapid recall • Sees connections & makes generalizations faster than peers • Curious; more sophisticated humor; has varied interest, and stronger powers of concentration • Asynchronous development between cognitive and physical abilities
