Chile News BulletinFebruary 2011 Business Highlights • General • Chilean Minister of Public Works announces that nearly 100% of infrastructure damaged in the February 2010 earthquake has been restored. Rural areas now have potable water distribution systems that are more effective than before the disaster.   The private sector played an important role in a wide variety of reconstruction projects.  • UNESCO allots $140 million USD for reconstruction of Chile’s historic Valparaíso. • Chile will be the third country in the Latin American region with the highest requirement of commercial airplanes by 2029. Chile News BulletinFebruary 2011 Business Highlights • Mining • Boston Consulting Group places Chilean companies Antofagasta PLC and SQM among the ten mining companies that provided the most shareholder returns between 1999-2009. • Minera Collahuasi to invest $473 million USD in exploration over the next 10 years. The drilling campaign will involve 3,000 drill holes covering 1.5 million linear meters. • Minera Isla Riesco gets final environmental approval for its Mina Invierno coal mining project in Southern Chile. Energy The cost of energy for production companies rose 25% in February 2011 due to droughts affecting hydroelectric plants, and the use of diesel fuel as a substitute, which incurs higher operation costs. Rising energy costs force Chilean institutions and companies to run more efficiently. Chile News BulletinFebruary 2011 Business Highlights • Construction • Construction sector activity grew by 9.3% in 2010, according to the Chilean Chamber of Construction. • Fishing • Salmon farming takes off, again, in southern Chile. • Riverfish will construct three new salmon farming operations in Chile, with construction expected to commence in late 2011.  These facilities will require an investment of $8.5 million USD, and will produce17,000 tons of salmon annually.   For more information, please contact Veronica Medina: vmedina@tradechile.cl; www.tradechile.cl

Chile News BulletinFebruary 2011 TradeChile Upcoming Events The Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) is organizing a virtual trade mission for Canadian companies from January-March, 2011.    The meetings will take place through virtual conference calls between Chilean and Canadian companies. Participating companies belong to the IT and educational services sectors. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation International (CMHC) will host a trade mission for British Columbian companies. The event will take place in Santiago from March 16th to 18th, 2011. Participating companies belong to the construction sector.
