THE SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 5, 2014
E N D
THE SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 5, 2014 “The Magi set out because of a deep desire which prompted them to leave everything and begin a journey. It was as though they had always been waiting for that star” (Pope Benedict XVI). Our response to the Father’s offer of salvation is that of the Magi: “To offer gold is to proclaim Christ’s kingship, to offer incense is to adore his Godhead, and to offer myrrh is to acknowledge his mortality” (Saint Odilo of Cluny). Creation responds as well: “When the king of heaven was born, the heavens knew that he was God because they immediately sent forth a star; the sea knew him because it allowed him to walk upon it; the earth knew him because it trembled when he died; the sun knew him because it hid the rays of its light” (Saint Gregory the Great). The manifestation of the Son of God to the world begs belief from us by which we will be led home by another way. the story of the three visitors to Bethlehem. Following the star, they come to offer gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Aided by the first two readings, we can open up the meaning of this vignette. God is present in our history. This is a gift for all. Whether arriving on dromedaries from Midian and Ephah or bearing gold and frankincense from Sheba, whole nations shall walk by this light. In the early Church, this meant that Gentiles would have to be seen as co- heirs with the Jews, members of the same body. // Enjoying the memories and mystery of this day should thus be more than thinking about the three kings. It is also far more important than any technical debate about the translation of “magi” (Greek). They have been called kings, wise men, or astrologers. In any event they signal a day to celebrate God’s manifestation in Christ Jesus. When we celebrate Epiphany we face the mystery of Christ's identity and our response in faith. Because this revelation is universal, we are presented with a further challenge. Do we treat some as “outsiders” as if we were not co-heirs? Do we act as if epiphany were for a few? ST. (Cf. Mal 3:1; 1 Chr 29:12) SUNDAY, January 5 – THE SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD – THREE KINGS SUNDAY: To honor the Magi, their gifts to the Christ Child, Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh (and chalk for the traditional Epiphany Home Blessing) will be blessed at all masses. Packets of these gifts will be available for home use. The offering is $1.00 per pack. Preserve this beautiful tradition! SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: 6:30AM and 10:45AM. THE FAMILY PRAYER CHALICE FOR VOCATIONS(FPC): Jesus told us to ask the Harvest Master to send laborers into his harvest. We hope the prayers of our participating families will bear fruit. May God be attentive to TERESA MILLER who will host the Family Prayer Chalice for Vocations this week. Sign up in Church Vestibule for February or call 570-399-5056. FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: Today’s gospel tells us “all Jerusalem” was up- set because “King Herod was deeply troubled.” A similar ripple effect happens in families; one person’s negative attitude can affect the whole family. If you want a peaceful and joyful home, it must start with you. Be peaceful and joyful! PRO-LIFE REFLECTION: We pray that our once great nation may return to respect for life, the law of God and a truth on which this nation was founded: the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness-for the born and pre-born. STEWARDSHIP: “Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11. The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to follow. Each of us is called to open our gifts before Jesus, offering Him what He needs. If you have trouble with this idea, keep one of the Magi from your Nativity set on your desk all year as a reminder to bring your gifts to Jesus. The Christmas Season continues with yet another view of God in our history. In his very flesh, Jesus is the revelation of God. This is a season to celebrate a baby, but even more the manifestation, “epiphany,” of God to the whole world. // The gospel warms many hearts with Successful Families According to a study of more than 500 family counselors, the following are the top traits of successful families: * Communicating and listening; * Affirming and supporting family members; * Respecting one another; * Developing a sense of trust; * Sharing time and responsibility; * Knowing right from wrong; * Having rituals and traditions; * Sharing a religious core; * Respecting privacy.
