  2. Birth • Born July 4, 1804 in Salem, MA • sixth generation of family • Born into prominent Puritan family

  3. Family • Sea-captain Father died when he was 4 of yellow fever • Nathaniel and two sister s were forced to live with their mom and her family. • Lacked sufficient funds after father’s death • Hawthorne and family would visit Raymond, Maine often to visit his uncle’s house

  4. Childhood • Nathaniel Hawthorne grew up in Massachusetts and was only son in family • Injured his leg playing ball in 1813, started reading while he was recuperating and developed critical thinking. • Decided he wanted to add W to his name “Hathorne”

  5. Living with his family in Maine, Nathaniel was isolated • Strolled through woods thinking and learning about the “unshackled freedom and solitude” through hunting and fishing

  6. Storytelling • Nathaniel was interested in story passed down in Hathorne family: • Convicted witch cursed ancestor and others involved with Salem witch trials. Witch told them that if they hung her, “God would give them blood to drink.” Later one of the men she cursed died from choking on his blood.

  7. Writing career • Started writing after attending Bowdoin College • First novel was unsuccessful, was unable to support himself • Took job at Boston custom house

  8. After College • Lived in experimental community based on cooperative living, Brook Farm • Married Sophia Peabody, who was friends with Emerson and Thoreau • Nathaniel was never able to relate to transcendentalism though
