Problem • High Gas Prices • Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) not up to par • Battery is not capable of high power demand
Objective To design and develop a battery-supercapacitor hybrid system
Specifications • 1kW Pulse Load for 18sec every 2minutes • Lithium Ion battery • Supercapacitor
Design Objectives • Design a battery to provide the average power to the load for at least 20 minutes. • Design a supercapacitor to provide the pulse power to the load. • Design and build a hybrid structure (or circuit configuration) of the battery and supercapacitor to provide needed power to the load. • Design and build a programmable load to simulate the pulsating load. • Test and demonstrate the hybrid energy storage system to prove that the constant power is from the battery and the pulse power of the load is from the supercapacitor. • Provide final report and suggestions to improve/optimize the system
Design Objectives Completed • Constructed 14 Cell Battery Pack • Lithium Polymer • 3.7 Volts per Cell • Program Control Module • Obtained a 165F Supercapacitor • Max Voltage: 48V • Obtained 3 Millennium3 relays • Obtained 2 Heat Sinks
Design Objectives Completed • Constructed Battery-SuperCapacitor Hybrid System • Tested the system
Design Improvements • Design more robust battery pack • Attach a movable load • Better container • Better relays • Circuit Protection
Future Applications • Add Sensors • Voltage/Current Display • Automobiles • Cell phones • Computers
