Each school principal sets the tone for appropriate dress, however, the rule of thumb is business casual. B. Report EarlyArrive at the assigned school a minimum of fifteen minutes before the beginning of the school day. Each job will inform you of the expected arrival time. • High School 7:15 • Middle School 7:45 • Elementary School 8:45 • Remember, students will encounter substitutes on a regular basis, and for that reason alone you are a very important part of the educational process.

D. Review the Day • Go to the assigned room, write your name on the board and begin preparations for the students. • If possible, have a short-written activity planned for the students to keep them on task while you are taking care of attendance and other morning routines.

  12. BEING PREPARED AND PROFESSIONAL Review the Day, Continued • Emergency Procedures - Become familiar with fire and disaster drill procedures to determine the route students will take to evacuate the building. If specific instructions cannot be found, check with a teacher close by or the assistant principal regarding the procedure to follow. • Follow the day’s schedule and lesson plans prescribed by the regular classroom teacher. • BEFORE the end of the day, check the regular teacher’s mailbox for memos, urgent messages, etc. • At the end of the day, fill out the Substitute Teacher Report or write a note to the teacher detailing your experience and leaving any messages about specific students. • Leave the room neat and orderly. • Check with the school office to see if you will be needed for the following day.
