CSCI 150 Introduction to High Technology Day 1 – Part 2
CSCI 150 – High Technology • Fisher Network Accounts • Logging in to the network • Logging in to email (see Webmail Guide) • Logging in to Blackboard (later) • Fish-R-Net (later) • Fisher “home” page
CSCI 150 – High Technology • The “P” Drive • As a student at SJFC you are given 250 MB of network space accessible on and off campus • Student network space is the recommend way of saving because our server is routinely backed up • Many lab computers don’t have floppy or zip drives • Also known as Network Drive, P-Drive, Citadel, or keep3 space • SAVE OFTEN! Don’t rely on floppy, zip or thumb drives. They can fail, get damaged or get lost/stolen!
CSCI 150 – High Technology • The “P” Drive – accessing from ON Campus • Navigate to the P: drive • Drag and drop files to your own computer • Do NOT save to the C: drive in the lab. Your files and documents will be lost after you log off or the computer is shut down • This drive saves to your network space on the server and is accessible both on campus and off campus
CSCI 150 – High Technology The “P” Drive – accessing from OFF Campus • Method 1 – FTP Through a Browser • Connect to the Internet and open up Internet Explorer • In the address bar type the link ftp://citadel.sjfc.edu • A dialog box will pop up asking for your user name and password
CSCI 150 – High Technology The “P” Drive – accessing from OFF Campus • Method 1 – FTP Through a Browser (con’t) • Your user name is 'academia\' + your SJFC user ID • Your password is the same password for logging onto the computers on campus and in Webmail • Drag and drop files. Do not edit over this link! • i.e. Copy the file from the P: drive to your computer • Edit the file • Copy the file BACK to the P: drive
CSCI 150 – High Technology The “P” Drive – accessing from OFF Campus • Method 2 – Using an FTP Program • Launch FTP Program (see FTP Guide) • Log in to citadel • Transfer files to your hard drive • Edit files • Transfer files back to the P: drive
CSCI 150 – High Technology The “P” Drive – accessing from OFF Campus • Method 3 – Emailing yourself files • Email files to yourself to “transfer” files to your P drive. • Email yourself with file attached while off-campus • While on campus, read the email and save the file to your P-drive • Works in reverse too • Doesn’t work for large files
CSCI 150 – High Technology Blackboard – Electronic Bulletin Board system • Professors use Blackboard to post course documents, assignments, information, class announcements, etc. • Not all professors use Blackboard and not all professors use Blackboard in the same capacity • Blackboard can be accessed through the SJFC Intranet page at http://home.sjfc.edu, underneath Campus Resources on the left hand side • Or go directly to the link at http://blackboard.sjfc.edu.
CSCI 150 – High Technology Blackboard - • Log into Blackboard using your SJFC username. This same username is used for your webmail. • Teachers automatically enroll their students into Blackboard and will be shown under Courses under the St. John Fisher tab • If you have not been automatically enrolled you must contact your teacher
CSCI 150 – High Technology Blackboard – Things you can find • Course Announcements/Documents • Assignments • View Grades • Communication – discussion boards • Submitting Assignment files
CSCI 150 – High Technology Blackboard – Digital Drop Box – Date/Time • Files sent to the Instructor will show the date and time submitted • Note that the Instructor can set limitations on submissions (number of tries, date range) • Note: The date and time displayed in each instance is not the date and time on the user’s machine, rather, it is the date and time on the Blackboard Learning System server
CSCI 150 – High Technology Fish-R-Net – What is it? • Fish-R-Net is used for major campus and academic operations • All students must register through Fish-R-Net for classes • Students can view their bill, financial aid package and schedule through Fish-R-Net
CSCI 150 – High Technology Fish-R-Net – How to use it • You can access Fish-R-Net through the SJFC Intranet page at http://home.sjfc.edu • Click on the link underneath the heading Campus Resources that reads 'Fish-R-Net‘ • This will bring you to a web page with links to Registration and Financial Aid Information connected with Fish-R-Net • Select the link that says 'Enter Secure Area.' The log-in screen will appear asking for your user ID and PIN
CSCI 150 – High Technology Fish-R-Net – How to use it • Your Fish-R-Net User Id is either your whole social security number (with out the dashes) or your SJFC ID number. Your SJFC ID number can be found on your SJFC ID card. When using your SJFC ID number must include the @ sign. • The PIN number the first time you login will be your 6 digit birthday. For example: January 2, 1934 would be 010234.
