  1. Second Quarter Assignment Assignment Set: 4/12/2012 Assignment Due: 5/8-10/2012 To be handed in at the Start of Class on the due date. No late submissions will be accepted

  2. The topic: Energy and Sustainability • America’s dependence on foreign oil has gone down every single year since President Obama took office. In 2010, we imported less than 50 percent of the oil our nation consumed—the first time that’s happened in 13 years—and the trend continued in 2011. • A new study from Pacific Northwest National Lab concludes that 17% of U.S. oil imports for transportation could be replaced by domestically-produced algae biofuels. • As world food prices reach new highs, a handful of U.S. politicians and hard-hit corporations are readying a fresh effort to forestall the use of more U.S. corn and soybeans as motor fuel. • They are likely doing so in vain, say experts.

  3. The topic: Energy and Sustainability • Write a 4 page essay to discuss the issue of a growing global population, more economic wealth, and thus demand/consumption), and the necessary energy needed to “feed” the world • You could look into alternative energy sources? • For vehicles (electric, ethanol, biodiesel) • For energy (Germany gives up on nuclear, now what?; UMD’s carbon neutrality goal) • Sustainable connection: How do we use less energy in buildings, transportation, at home – without major changes to infrastructure or energy source (i.e. coal, oil, and gas) • What are the human rights implications of energy source and distribution? Haves vs. Have-nots. • Fuel vs. Food debate…discuss the issue and implications.

  4. Second Quarter Assignment • Format • 4 pages, single spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman • Introduction – an overview of what you’re going to say • Body – your story. Describe the issue and the evidence • Conclusion – say what you’ve said and tie things together • Discussion – what’s next? Ways forward. • If you use literature sources (original research) cite them. • Example citation: • Mann et al., (2009) Global signatures and dynamical origins of the little ice age and medieval climate anomaly, Science, (326), p1256-1259.
