  3. Gomes Eannes De Azurara: Led by Prince Henry the Navigator, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to explore the Atlantic Ocean in the 1400’s. Prince Henry was the third son of King John I and the younger brother of King Edward. Gomes Eannes de Azurara, the official historian of the Portuguese court, outlined Prince Henry’s motives for exploration in his book, The Chronicle of Guinea, published in 1453.
