“Christian Speech”Ephesians 4:29 There are four elements in what can be described as “Christian Speech”.
1. No Garbage “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth…” The word “corrupt” means rotten, worthless, putrid. A corrupt word can be a dumb word, a death word, a destructive word, a demonic word. Here's the admonition of scripture – “The devil may put a corrupt word in our mouth, but, we don’t have to speak it.”
There are three types of people in the world: • Those who think BEFORE they speak. • Those who think WHILE they speak. • Those who think AFTER they speak.
Don’t let the “corrupt” word proceed out of your mouth. • Red light (PAUSE) before you speak. • Yellow light (PONDER) before you speak. • Green light (PRAY) before you speak.
2. What Is Good “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good…” “Good” is that which is of benefit, valuable, virtuous. Morally right. “A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth. And the recompense of a mans hand will be rendered to him”. Proverbs 12:14 “A man has joy by the answer of his mouth and a word spoken in due season how good it is”. Proverbs 15:23
3. What Causes Growth “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification…” The word “edification” means for building one up, not tearing one down. The amplified says “What is beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and to the occasion, that it may be a blessing.” “We then who are strong ought to bear with the weakness of the weak and not to please ourselves. Let each please his neighbor, for his good, leading to edification.” Romans 15:1-2
4. What Is Graceful? “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” “Let your speech be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” Colossians 4:6 (Leviticus 2:13) “The words of a wise mouth are gracious.”Ecclesiastes 10:12
“Grace” communicates; favor, acceptance. They are empowering, enabling, generous, kind, benevolent words. “So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth.” Luke 4:22 “He who loves purity of heart and has grace on his lips, the King will be his friend.” Proverbs 22:11
