  5. Sura Al-Alaq - Background • Al-Alaq – mean Blood Clot, takenm from 2nd line in verse. • Verses 1-5 are largely believed by scholars to be the first revelation to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) • The Hadith from Hadrat Aishah, which Imam Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, and other traditionists have related with several chains of authorities, is one of the most authentic Ahadith on the subject. In it Hadrat Aishah has narrated the full story of the beginning of revelation as she herself heard it from the Holy Messenger of Allah • Muslims believe that, following these verses, there was a break up of up to a year before the revelations continued with Surah 68. • But the remainder of this Surah (96:6-19) came soon after the Fatrah, and that portion is joined on to the first five verses.

  7. Verses 1-5 • Proclaim! (or read!) In the Name of your Lord and Cherisher, Who created - • Created man from a mere clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). • Proclaim! And your Lord is the Most Bountiful, • He who taught (the use of )the pen • Has taught man that which he knew not.

  8. Hath taught Man that which he knoweth not. • Nay, verily, Man is insolent, • Because he seeth himself possessed of riches. • Verily, to thy Lord is the return of all. • What thinkest thou of him that holdeth back • A servant of God when he prayeth?

  9. What thinkest thou? Hath he followed the true Guidance, or enjoined Piety? • What thinkest thou? Hath he treated the truth as a lie and turned his back? • What! doth he not know how that God seeth? • Nay, verily, if he desist not, We shall seize him by the forelock,

  10. The lying sinful forelock! Then let him summon his associates; • We too will summon the guards of Hell: • Nay! obey him not; but adore, and draw nigh to God.

  11. Overview • The chief message of the Sura is the command to preach • Through this Surah one is made to realize how insignificant man is compared to the power of Allah who created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood. Allah has been mankind teacher and has taught man everything he knows and yet mankind has forgotten him. • It’s a reminder that people come from something small and seemingly insignifcant and that much of our knowledge isn't really ours

  12. Overview • It then goes on to explain the chief obstacle to the delivery of the message to man, ie. man's own obstinacy, vanity, and insolence. • Allah goes on to say that our ego has blurred our minds in that we see ourselves as completely independent and detached from him and consider ourselves as the masters of our destiny.

  13. Paired Task - Idiots Guide to the Qur’aan • You should now be experts in the Qur’an which means you are the perfect people to create a small guide on the Qur’an for your local mosque. • You guide should: • Colourful • Neat • Informative • Detailed • In your guide you should include • How the Qur’an was revealed • The unique nature of the Qur’an • The Difference between Meccan and Medinan Suras • How the Qur’an was ultimately compiled • The role it continues to play in the life of Muslims • A summary of Sura 1 and Sura 96
