  2. About • Pondicherry University – Established in 1986 • Ananda Rangapillai Library – Established in 1986 • First M.Phil. Dissertation – Submitted in Aug. 1988 • First Ph.D. Thesis - Submitted in May 1990

Automation and Digitisation • Automation of Library started in 1994 • Completely Automated in 1999 • Digital Library Initiatives – CD-ROM Journal Databases in 1997 - Online Journals in 2004 - Upgradation of LMS in 2006 - In-house digitisation of 20 Nos. of Theses - Institutional Repository in 2010

  4. In-house Digitisation • Simple Scanning Using Document Scanner • Converted into single PDF Files • Problems Encountered – Obtaining Bi-tonal Image - Removal of Skew - Removal of Speckle - Lack of Manpower - Lack of Optimisation

Digitisation – Out-sourced • Standards to be followed – Text to be scanned to Bi-tonal 150/300/600 dpi with appropriate threshold levels - All images should be De-skewed, De-speckled & dusted off - 100% scaling factor should be aimed - Tilt of 0.4 degree - Pre-flighting PDF for web optimization

  6. Digitisation-Out-sourced Contd… • Storage and Delivery Mechanism – Un-cleaned master TIFF - Cleaned B&W Tiff compressed to Group IV - Storing the Digitized content on CD/DVD - Metadata as per Dublin core standards

  7. Digitisation–Out-sourced Contd… • Retrieval Software – Front End - VB, /.Net/PHP based technology - Back End - SQL/ MS-Access/ as back end database - Should run through all popular browsers - should have administrative module for data editing/ updation - should have authentication

  8. Building IR (DSpace) • Proposed in 2010 to Build IR using DSpace – Installation of OS - Installation of DSpace - Uploading e-Theses in DSpace - Commissioning - User Training`

  9. Building IR (DSpace) • Installation of OS & DSpace – Installed Red Hat Linux OS (Unsuccessful) - Installed CentOS (Unsuccessful) - Sought Experts Opinion - Installed Ubuntu OS - Installed DSpace

Theses Digitised • A total no of 574 Theses were Digitised – Page by page checking by Library Staff - Entering Bibliographic Details - Uploading Digitised Theses in DSpace (Single PDF) - Verifying for correctness - Sending the same to INFLIBNET (Shodhganga) - Second University in India to sign MoU with INFLIBNET for Theses submission to Shodhganga

  11. PU Theses in Shodhganga • A total no of 574 Theses were sent to INFLIBNET – Includes multiple subjects/Departments - Includes theses from Affiliated Colleges of PU Theses in English,French,Sanskrit,Hindi & Tamil - Only 448 theses available at Shodhganga - 126 Theses yet to be uploaded by INFLIBNET

  13. Plagiarism Check - TURNITIN • TURNITIN–Subscription available at PU Since 2010 • Plagiarism Check is mandatory for Ph.D. & M.Phil. • No-Due Certificate will be issued only based on – Turnitin Document ID - Percentage of Plagiarism - Certificate from the Supervisor
