  1. Welcome to 6th Grade Science Ms. Milotte

  2. Remember to… • Walk quietly and calmly through the halls. • Come to class on time. • Bring everything you need with you to class – the three Ps: *pencils, paper, planner. *You usually need more than one Pencil (they get broken, lost, stolen, Etc…)

  3. When you get here… • Sit down quietly in your assigned seat. • This is a good time to make sure your pencils are sharpened (have more than one sharpened). • Take out your planner and write down your homework (posted on board) – even if you have no homework – write the word, “none.” • Take out your Science folder and begin writing your warm-up question (posted on board). • When the bell rings, you need to be in your seat and quiet.

  4. During Class… • Please stay in your seat. • Face the direction that I am teaching: video projection vs. podium - swivel • Please raise your hand if you want to talk.

  5. If you need to go to the restroom… • Try to go sometime between classes. You will have more time between blocks – and less time between classes (SS and Science). • If you need to go during class – you can use one of your Emergency Restroom Passes. • You will get three passes per marking period. • Simply put the pass on the right hand corner of your desk – when I pick it up- you can go. • Make sure to sign out in the Pass Notebook. • Take the Pass Notebook with you – that is your pass.

  6. If you don’t use all of your restroom passes… • If, by the end of the marking period, you still have some passes left, you will get a Grand Knight’s token for each one you have left. If you have all 3 left- I will give you 10 tokens, total (1 is a bonus). • If you run out of passes before the end of the marking period – I will of course let you go – but you will get no Knight’s Tokens at the end of the marking period. In this case, please raise your hand to ask to go to the bathroom at an appropriate time (like when I am not in the middle of talking to the class.)

  7. Solving problems in Science… • Science is about solving problems! • A good Scientist is not frustrated by being confused! • Sometimes we will encounter easily solved problems (…like, I have no pencil!) What are some ways you could solve this problem? • Sometimes we will encounter really tough problems (…like what is the square root of pie times the speed of light?) Don’t give up!!! Keep trying!!!

  8. Three before me… When you get really stuck… Try… • Re-reading the directions. • Asking a friend. • Asking another friend. Then… Ask Ms. Milotte.

  9. Be Intelligent! • Be persistent • Ask questions • Use your senses • Control your impulsivity • Be creative and curious • Use past knowledge • Listen with empathy • Check for accuracy • Communicate with precise • language • Think flexibly • Be aware of your thinking • process

  10. 9 Different Kinds of Intelligences

  11. Everyone is smart!!!

  12. “Nature Smart” • Not everyone has naturalist intelligence. • That is okay! • Although Science focuses on many aspects of nature, other intelligences can be useful, too.

  13. Environmentally Smart • Even if you are not “nature smart” you do need to be environmentally smart. • Our environment is in dire need! • There are lots of little things that you can do – that I expect you to do, here in our classroom, that will help make a big difference.

  14. Go Green! • Northern Middle School is aspiring to become a Maryland Green School. • Reduce: don’t buy stuff you don’t need • Reuse: reuse the stuff that you already have (instead of throwing it out to buy new stuff) • Recycle: Aluminum cans, glass, plastic bottles #1 and #2, paper, and cardboard

  15. Blue Recycling Bin Cardboard Computer paper Construction paper Notebook paper Ms. M will yell at you if she sees you throwing this stuff in the trash!

  16. Other Hallway Recycling Bin(near water fountain) Steel Cans Aluminum Cans Glass #1 Plastic (Soda and Gatorade Bottles) #2 Plastic (milk jugs)

  17. Please don’t recycle… • Food • Paper with food smeared on it • Gum • Candy Wrappers • Tissues (…and boogers) • Bottle Caps

  18. Green School Committee • Everyone is invited to join the Green School Committee. • We meet once a week – after school. • We want Northern Middle to be a “greener” place. • We need to educate others about being green. • You are the future of Northern Middle – you can make a change!

  19. Learning Outside • Learning outside rocks! • I want to be able to take you all outside … a lot! • But when we go outside – we actually have to learn while we are out there. • Or…we can’t go outside anymore!

  20. Outside Safety Rules • Walk down the hall quietly. • Don’t mess with the wee critters! • Don’t pick anything up off of the ground. • No running, pushing, wrestling, tripping, punching, or gymnastics – this is not recess. • Stay back at least 1 foot from the stream – unless otherwise specified (sometimes we will go into the stream). • Do your work…or we will have to do our learning indoors! • Don’t litter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
