  2. PRESENTATION CONTENT • Petronius Project Overview • Discuss 4 Key ERD Enabling Technologies & Practices • Hole cleaning technology & practices • torque and drag pre-drill modeling & real time monitoring • “Push the bit” & “Point the Bit” RSS • Casing running tools & modeling • roller casing/liner centralizers • floated casing and liners • Geomagnetic Referencing in Surveying • Electric line tractors

  3. PETRONIUS LOCATIONVIOSCA KNOLL BLOCK 786

  4. PETRONIUS PROJECT OVERVIEW • Chevron / Marathon 50/50 Partnership. • Water Depth 1750’. • Discovery & Appraisal Wells drilled in 1995 w/ semi. • Project Approved August 1996. • Pre-drilled 6 wells w/ semi from well template. Pre-completed 1 well. • Compliant Tower installedduring 1998 … World’s tallest freestanding structure. • 16 month delay due to dropped South Deck Module … dropped 12/03/98. • First Production July 2000. • 21 slots … 14 oil wells … 2 gas wells … 5 water injectors. • 8 ERD wells … last 2 are 30,880’ MD and 31,481’ MD.

  9. PETRONIUS DOWNTOWN VIDEO

  10. ERD HOLE CLEANING TECHNOLOGY & PRACTICES • Three Levels of Hole Cleaning Required in ERD Wells. • Shut the pumps down, make a connection, re-establish circulation and rotation, and drill ahead. • POOH & TIH w/ drill string & BHA. • Run casing. • There’s a lot of technology and ERD practices involved just in this part of a successful ERD well.

  11. Mechanics of Cuttings Removal in High Angle Hole High Flow Area Low Flow Low Flow Cuttings thrown into active flow regime Hole Casing Pipe rotation stirs cuttings beds

  12. Rotary Steerable SystemSchlumberger’s PowerDrive™ X5™ • “Push-the-Bit” Rotary-Steerable System • Fully Rotating system to optimize hydraulics and cuttings transport • For use with gauge bits • Short gauge-length steering unit to minimize swab & surge • Functional for open-hole sidetracks • Real-Time Gamma Ray measurements for geo-stopping reduces geological risks

  13. Rotary Steerable SystemSchlumberger’s PowerDrive™ Xceed™ • “Point-the-Bit” Rotary-Steerable System • Fully Rotating system to optimize hydraulics and cuttings transport • Traditional steerable stabilizer designs • Directional Drilling with bi-center bits • Dogleg capability to accommodate difficult well profiles in hard and soft formations • Functional in open-hole sidetracks and over-gauge holes • Reed-Hycalog SBX152 Steering Wheel™ Bicentrix™ PDC bit equipped with TReX™ cutters

  14. ROLLER CASING/LINER CENTRALIZERS

  15. LoDRAG™ RollerCentralizer Designed to reduce axial drag while running in/out of the wellbore

  16. LoTORQ/DRAG™ Roller Centralizer • The LoTORQ/DRAG™tool is designed with multiple pods of rollers. • Each pod contains two rollers that are in contact with the inner pipe and two rollers with a higher profile for contacting the exterior well bore wall

  17. CASING/LINER FLOTATION

  18. GEOMAGNETIC REFERENCING

  19. Geomagnetic Referencing Service:Reducing Spatial Uncertainty • Two Aeromagnetic surveys used to create local crustal model • Several surface marine surveys were used to validate aeromagnetic data • Minute-by-minute data from BSL used as reference

  20. Geomagnetic Referencing Service:Reducing Spatial Uncertainty • Reduced the ellipse of uncertainty by 65% • Improved well placement by 87.7 feet to successfully intercept 250 foot target

  21. ELECTRIC LINE TRACTORS

  22. Welltec Tractors WORLD RECORD !!! (26,930’)

  23. Wireline Tractoring:Schlumberger’s MaxTRAC™ • An efficient wireline motive system for high-angle and horizontal well bores • Can be used for logging while moving downward • Continuous motion up to 2,200 ft/hr
