  2. Introduction • Indonesia have a lot of culture start from performing arts, visual arts, literature, sports and our creation is all together as one culture. Music, dance, drama or theater, and material arts from the performing art. Painting, crafting, sculpture, and our architecture ir our visual art. Dongeng is one of our traditional literature that we usually used. It is usually been told by our ancestors. All of our culture is really unique and really interesting in different cities. • Indonesia is a wide country that consist of many cultures that have many musical traditions. The biggest culture with highly musical tradition is from Javanese. Gamelan is a musical ensemble from Indonesia or we can say from Bali or Java. Island featuring some of instrument such as met-allophones, xylophones, drums and gongs; bamboo flutes and others. Vocalist can also be included.

  3. Gamelan • Gamelan is the main element of Indonesian traditional music. each gamelan is different from other because of the instrumental groups and other functions. The instruments in gamelan will have sets of tuned bronze gongs, gong-chimes, metallophones, drums, one or more flute, bowed and plucked string instruments, and sometime singers. The most popular gamelan can be found in Java and Bali.

  4. Function of Gamelan • Gamelan cannot be performed just by one person because it is for a group performance effort. Gamelan was played in like traditional ceremonies, ritual, special community celebrations, shadow puppet shows and for the royal family. It is also used to accompany dances in the court temple and village rituals. Besides that, gamelan also provides inspirations in life for many professional musicians and for special people that made gamelan It is also performed as a concert music at social and cultural gatherings to welcome guest and audiences there. And gamelan used also for accompanying many kinds of both traditional and modern dances, drama, theatrical and puppetry. Now days, gamelan can be kept in places such as courts, temples, museums, schools or even privates homes.

  5. The Beliefs • Indonesian traditional people mostly Javanese thinks that gamelan have supernatural power. They all respect gamelan. Some people say it is guided by the spirit. We cannot disrespect gamelan, example to step it because the spirit will be offended. It is the most important music instrument for Javanese people. Gong Ageng is the main spirit of gamlean.
