FAO Vision “Army Foreign Area Officers are Soldiers grounded in the Profession of Arms; who provide leadershipandexpertise in diverse organizations in joint, interagency, intergovernmental and multinational environments; who advise seniors as regional experts; and who offer unique war fighting competencies―cross-cultural capabilities, interpersonal communications and foreign language skills―that are critical to mission readiness of the Army in today’s dynamic strategic environment.” UNCLASSIFIED/FOUO 3

FAO Training Foreign Area Officers Key Enablers in Prevent, Shape, Win IRT ILE ACS Language Joint FAO Course Sustainment Intermediate Level Education (ILE) Sustainment Joint FAO Course, Phase I Language Training In-Region Training (IRT) Advanced Civil Schooling (ACS) • Career field orientation • 1 week at DLI • Curriculum focused on key FAO missions in the Army and JIIM • OSD funding • Between 26 and 63 weeks • Standard = 2/2/2 • Language dependent on AOC • Immerse officer • 12 months • Country Team Internships • Host-nation PME • Regional travel • Improve language to 3/3 • Regionally focused Master’s Degree • 12-18 months • Large diversity of schools = diversity of thought and networking • Maintain Army connection • Warrior ethos • Army operations • Planning skills • Sustain perishable language skills • Joint FAO Course, Phase II • Ensure breadth and depth of assignments
