  16. Writing ARC Applications • Do you really need an ARC grant? • Read successful applications in your area • Don’t submit a sub-standard application just to get numbers up

  17. Quality… “The art of grantsmanship will not turn mediocre science into a fundable grant proposal. However, poor grantsmanship will, and often does, turn very good science into an unfundable grant proposal. Good writing will not save bad ideas, but bad writing can kill good ones.” Jacob Kraicer, MD, PhD Professor Department of Physiology Faculty of Medicine University of Toronto

  18. Track Record

  19. Track Record • This should be assessed before preparing the application • Scores are a team average • Consider carefully whether you are competitive in the ARC arena

  20. Track Record • Early Career Researchers • May be advantages to applying as sole CI or with other ECRs • Consider the project as a whole

  21. Summaries • Use PLAIN English • Capture the reader’s attention • This may be the only part of your application read by some ARC members • DON’T start with • “This project aims to…” • “This research will investigate…” • “We aim to explain…” • “This study will attempt..."

  22. Project Description THE OBJECT To believe in what you are doing and convince your peers that it is worthwhile

  23. Project Description • Sell your project • Show your commitment • Plan your application • Demonstrate your knowledge • Define your aims • Design your format

  24. Significance and Innovation • Your project must come across as exciting and important • Accentuate why your project is unique, different, individual, … • MINIMUM 1 page

  25. Approach

  26. Approach • See this as a road map of how you will achieve your aims • Provide enough information for assessment but don’t overwhelm the reader with your rhetoric • Include a timetable

  27. Progress Reports

  28. National Benefit • Focus on the Big Picture

  29. Project Description BALANCE!

  30. Lost Articles

  31. Feedback • All applications must be read by at least two people not named as applicants • Preferably one expert and one non-expert • Research Office staff are available
