  1. Combining Quia Web With Blogging: Tools for Teaching 21st Century Skills Presenter: Donna Dietrich www.techpddietrich.blogspot.com

  2. Blogging • Blogging has become popular and many schools are now requiring teachers to create classroom blogs to allow online discussion forums, communicate with parents and students, etc. • With a little creativity, blogs can be a valuable tool in helping to create an online or hydrid course.

  3. Quia and Blogs • Quia is a site teachers can use to create a class page including activities, online quizzes, important links, and chances to collaborate with other teachers. • You can also store files such as Word documents, PowerPoints, etc. You can allow students access to these using links from your class page or blog. • The address to set up a 30-day trial account is www.quia.com

  4. Why Combine Quia With My Blog? • Both alone have flaws. • File storage and posting can be difficult on blogs • Blogs do not provide a means of creating online quizzes and games • Quia pages lack the visual appeal of a blog • Quia does not have a means of creating a discussion board.

  5. How Can Quia Be Used With My Blog? • An economical means of creating online or hybrid courses – alternative to Blackboard • A resource for homebound students to access content and participate in class activities. • Quick and effective way for students who must be absent to obtain make-up work • A source of meaningful homework assignments or extra practice for those who need it. • File storage for access by teacher and students from anywhere.

  6. Setting Up a Quia Page • Profile • Class Set-Up • File Storage • Adding Links • Creating Quizzes • Creating Activities

  7. Setting Up a Quia Page • Go to the blog address www.techpddietrich.blogspot.com • Open the instructions for Setting up a Quia Account. It is located under the Instructions and Resources from the Training tab. • Follow the instructions to set up your trial.

  8. Linking to Your Quia Page From Your Blog • From www.techpddietrich.blogspot.com • Open the file titled How to Use Your Quia Page in Conjunction with Your Blog • Follow the instructions to set up your blog and add your links from Quia.

  9. What Resources Are Available? • www.quia.com – free 30-day trial of Quia • www.blogspot.com This site can be used to create a free blog for your classroom • http://www.ucopenaccess.org/course/category.php?id=9 - UC Open Access Courses (provides online activities for different courses as well as virtual labs for enrichment or substitution of in-class labs). • www.blabberize.com – add voice to any photo to make instruction come alive • www.google.com – Google Earth, Google Books, etc. can be used as resources for your classroom. • http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/ - Genetic Science Learning Center (great resource for Biology courses). • www.youtube.com - Great educational videos can be found on YouTube.
