Constitutional Convention • The year was 1787. The place was the State House in Philadelphia, it was the same location where the Declaration of Independence had been signed 11 years earlier. For 4 months, 55 delegates from some states met to frame a Constitution for a federal republic that would last for a long long time.
The Bill of Rights • Opponents repeatedly charged that the Constitution as drafted would open a way to tyranny to the central government. In their heads was the memory of the British violation of civil rights before and after . They demanded a "bill of rights" that would spell out. SOME state conventions in their formal ratification of the Constitution asked for such amendments; others ratified the Constitution with the trying to understand that the amendments would be offered lol .
The Great Compromise • A compromise was reached June 29th, 1787 in Philadelphia bringing the the New Jersey Plan and the Virginia Plan. This has been a big conflict for quite a while. The New Jersey Plan was canceled for 4 days, but the bigger states rejected it. The Virginia Plan was debated for 2 weeks. Many believe that the compromise that has been reached is a major problem towards the unification of the States under a Federal System and has solved the problem of states. When it appeared that the Constitutional Convention would break up the delegates began to make promises on important issues. The first thing that they fixed was the problem of State Representation.
13th 14th 15th Amendments • All of the amendments have to do with freedom of slaves. • 14TH and 15TH have to do with voting of citizens
15th 19th 26th Amendments • All this amendments have to do with voting rights, • The 18th amendments give slaves right to vote • The 19th amendments gives women right to vote • And the 26th amendments gives 18 and older kids to vote
18TH AND 21TH AMENDMENTS • The 18th amendment makes alcohol illegal. • The 21th amendment makes alcohol legal. • Alcohol was illegal for 13 years because people were getting drunk and doing bad stuff.
The Preamble • Supreme Court has often referred to it as evidence of the origin, scope, and purpose of the Constitution. • ''Its true office,'' wrote Joseph Story in his COMMENTARIES, • IS to expound the nature and extent and application of the powers actually conferred by the Constitution, and not to create them.
The Northwest Ordinance • Considered to be one of the most significant achievements of the Congress • Northwest Ordinance of 1787 put the world on notice not only that the land north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi would be settled but that it would someday becomes part of the United States.
The Presidential Cabinet • The tradition of the Cabinet dates back to the beginnings of the Presidency. • The Cabinet includes the Vice President and the heads of 15 departments.
