  1. The First Commandment Chapter 2

  2. The First Commandment • The First Commandment teaches that there is one true God, who alone should be worshipped. • God has revealed himself to man and man in return must believe all that God has revealed to him. • The First Commandment forbids *superstition, impiety, heresy, apostasy and anything contrary to the reverence we owe God. * Know each of these definitions!

  3. The First Commandment • Worship of false gods is called idolatry. • Man must not put anything before God. Man must love God above all else.

  4. The First Commandment • The story about the rich man teaches that we must love God above all creatures. This love requires detachment from worldly possessions.

  5. The First Commandment • The Israelites offered sacrifices to God to acknowledge him as creator of all and to atone for their sins. • They will learn that because the victim, priest, and intention could not be perfect and in total union with God, no sin offering made by man could fully atone for our sins. • Jesus, the perfect priest, offered the perfect sacrifice of himself, the perfect victim, with the perfect intention, to atone for our sins. This is the Sacrifice of the Mass.
