Atomic Mass (Single Element) • The atomic mass of a single element can be found on the periodic table of elements • The atomic mass of an element can be found usually in the upper right hand corner of that element’s box. Example: Potassium’s atomic mass is 39.10g/mol Aluminum’s atomic mass is 26.98g/mol
Oxygen (O) Sodium (Na) = 16 grams/mole = 22.9 grams/ mole Examples of Atomic Mass (Single)
Atomic Mass (Combined Elements) • The atomic mass of combined elements can be found by adding together the atomic mass’s of all the elements. • Example: H2O = 18 g/mol NaCl = 58.44 g/mol
H2O (H2= 1+1; O= 16: 1+1+16) NaCl (Na= 23; Cl= 35.5: 23+35.5) = 18 grams/mole = 58.5 grams/mole Examples of Atomic Mass (Combined)
How You Convert • When converting from grams to moles, first take the given number of grams of that element(s) • Next, multiple it by [1 mole of your element divided by the atomic mass of your element (grams)] • You now have converted grams to moles
Examples of Converting Grams to Moles • 100 g Al *1 m Al 26.9 g Al = 3.72 m Al • 200 g H2O *1 m H2O 18.0 g H2O = 11.0 m H2O
How You Convert • When converting moles to grams, you take the given number of moles of the element(s) • Next, you multiply that number by [the atomic mass of the element(s) divided by one mole of the element] • You have now converted moles to grams!
Examples of Converting Moles to Grams • .0500 m Cu *63.5 g Cu 1 m Cu = 3.00 g Cu • .090 m NaCl *58 g NaCl 1 m NaCl = 5.0 g NaCl
