  2. Spiritual meaning in simple coincidences: * A snake found under a person's porch may be seen as the presence of evil. This could be a warning from God or a visit from the devil. * A woman accidentlly burning a shirt may represent the fact that God was preparing her for the future death of her husband.

  3. Indians The Puritans began to see the Indians as "devils." The Puritan's success at defeating Indians on certain occasions was seen as justification from God for killing Indians. The Salem Witch Trial would become anothe episode of reading in the "religious meaning" of a situation.

  4. The Prologue http://www.vcu.edu/engweb/webtexts/Bradstreet/bradpoems.htm

  5. Response: Question to consider: Do you see in the two poems unresolved conflicts between her inner feelings and the doctrines of Puritan orthodoxy and ideas about marriage? Explain

  6. Literary Techniques/Terms 1. Lyric poetry is a poem used to express feelings. Lyric poems have specific rhyming schemes and are often, but not always, set to music or a beat. 2. Conceits are unusual, funky comparisons between two startlingly different subjects. 3. Wit - using really weird ideas to make the poem difficult to read - to make you think.

  7. Puritan Poety is an oxymoron - how can a Puritan write poetry when Puritans were hostile to any imaginative literature. Puritan ministers warned that senses were unreliable - anything earthly was damned to hell to include most uses of language...... EXCEPT for religious instruction.

  8. Anne Bradstreet • first book of poems published in America • early poems were didactic - first poem at 19 • raised by a liberal father who had no problem with education of his daughter • she accepted two spheres of thought: men have their jobs and woman theirs "The Prologue" drips with irony.

  9. EDWARD TAYLOR • now regarded as the best of the colonial poets • poems were prayers before writing his sermons • Harvard-minister • life filled with hardships: lost 5 children and first wife • tried to get beyond formalatic ways of thinking to try new ways
