  3. When was the Scandal? • President Harding’s term in 1921 • When Albert Fall became secretary of interior

  4. What happened in the Scandal? • Harding gave Fall petroleum and oil fields • Teapot Dome, WY and Elk Hills and Buena Vista , CA

  5. More of the Scandal • Petroleum reserves were set for Navy • Issued when Taft was in office

  6. Scandal, Scandal, Scandal • In 1922, fields were given to Fall • Teapot Dome fields to Harry F. Sinclair • Elk Hills field to Edward L. Doheny

  7. “Bribery” • The fields were leased • Fall was given “gifts” from oilmen

  8. News Breaks Out • Wall Street Journal said Fall had secret arrangement • Fall denied the actions

  9. Truth Breaks Out • Fall suddenly had nicer possessions • This made the Senate very suspicious • Robert La Follette lead an investigation

  10. Investigation • Thomas Walsh led for La Follette • Followed Fall for two years • Wanted to find proof he was guilty

  11. More Investigating • Fall seemed to cover all tracks • But one question remained… • How did Fall become so rich??

  12. Fall’s Cover Up • Fall covered up all his tracks • He invested his money to cattle ranches

  13. One Mistake… • Fall covered up all his mistakes except • His $100,000 loan from Doheny • This was found during the investigation

  14. Punishment • Fall was found guilty for bribery • Fined $100,000 and 1 year in prison • First presidential cabinet sent to prison

  15. Other Punishment • Doheny was charged for attempting bribe • Sinclair was charged $100,000 and jury tampering
