  2. Where a tsunami happens • A tsunami usually happens in places like California, Hawaii, Japan, Indonesia, and Africa because of all the earthquake and volcanic activity in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean.

  3. What is a tsunami? A tsunami is a set of ocean waves caused by any large, sudden disturbance of the sea surface. “Tsunami” is the Japanese word for “harbor wave”. Tsunamis can occur by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides.

  4. What typically happens • A tsunami is usually started when an earthquake, underwater volcanic eruption or landslide happens. A normal earthquake, 6.5 would still bring a heck of a damage, so imagine how Southeast Asia felt when they had a giant earthquake of 9.0! An earthquake of that power can take trillions of tons of water and carry it for hundreds of miles. Tsunamis are so powerful, in 1997 they discovered that a tsunami had carried an asteroid that had flown down to Earth about 2 million years ago! The point is that tsunamis are always powerful and very dangerous.

  5. What can Happen if Tsunamis are at the Extreme? The biggest tsunami ever was the Alaskan tsunami which was 1,720 feet. It was at the Lituya bay in 1958. The tsunami was triggered by a 7.7 earthquake in Alaska. This type of tsunami is called mega tsunami.

  6. How a Tsunami is Measured • A tsunami is either measured by meters or feet. For example, the Japan tsunami in 2011 was 100 feet tall. The Sri Lanka tsunami of 2004 was 98 feet.

  7. Key Terms • Key Terms • tectonic plate • large segment of Earth's crust and uppermost mantle (region just below the crust) that moves as a unit over Earth's surface, floating on a partially molten layer of rock below • continental plate • large segment of Earth's crust and uppermost mantle (region just below the crust) that supports a major landmass • wavelength • in regular wave patterns, the distance from the crest, or top, of one wave to the crest of the next wave • continental margin • region where continental crust meets oceanic crust • continental shelf • underwater plain buried under relatively shallow waters along the edge of a continent

  8. Effects After the Tsunami • The main effects after a tsunami is the flooding and food and water contamination. Since a tsunami is an endless flood, that causes the most deaths of the after effects. The tsunami water is filled with dirt and debris, so if it damaged the water system, the water won’t be safe to drink. The food won’t be safe to eat, either.

  9. Facts and History • The first tsunami ever recorded may have been about 400 B.C.! It is a secondary natural disaster from a volcanic eruption or an earthquake. It can flood for miles once it hits the shore.
