The HIM Team… Talking ‘Bout My Generation • 1979 – Graduated with Diploma of Medical Record Administration The Baby Boomer • 1995 – Graduated with Bachelor of Applied Science (Health information Management) Generation X • 2008 – Graduated with Bachelor of Public Health (Health Information Management) Generation Y

  8. 1979 • Prime Minister – Malcolm Fraser • Population ~ 14 million • 60 Minutes & Prisoner make their TV debut • Trivial pursuit developed • Jumpsuit - Designed for both men and women, the jumpsuit was highly popular at this time • Sony Walkman – Invented in 1979

  9. 1979 Medical Record Administration ISSUES • Everything on paper. Reaching capacity storage & understanding new technologies. • Greater reliance on microfilm & microfiche. • Faxing technology began to develop popularity in the 1980s.

  10. 1995 • Friends – the ‘Rachel’ • Prime Minister – Paul Keating • Telecom changed to Telstra • Pay Television arrives in Australia with Foxtel & Optus Vision • Population ~ 17 million • Google not yet invented as a search engine. Used Netscape, Yahoo or Altavista

  11. 1995 Health Information Management ISSUES • Increasing issues in facilities with lack of storage space & increasing retention schedules • Early uptake of technology such as optical discs • Boom in dependence on email technology • Increasing reliance on faxing clinical information & associated privacy issues

  12. 2008 • Prime Minister – Kevin Rudd • Population ~ 21 million • Google Street View images of Australia city streets added to Google Maps & Google Earth software • Australia was released

  13. 2008Health Information Management ISSUES • Graduates go into workplaces that are primarily paper based after embracing internet and mobile phone technology throughout university • HIM workforce dominated by older HIMs that have less trust in new technologies • Ongoing storage issues which are forcing organisations to make decisions re electronic storage option • Multiple types of information systems and issues with interfacing and sharing of information while maintaining privacy legislative requirements

  14. How Can We Work Together Effectively? • Managing different communication styles • Balancing expectations around change and organisation outcomes • Effectively working cohesively when different generations manage each other

Generations Working Together Through Change • Important that each generation of HIMs accept and acknowledge each other for their varying skills and experience • Manage HIM team in a way that older generations are respected for their knowledge whilst younger HIMs are encouraged to offer new perspectives on organisational goals • HIMs must work together to promote themselves as leaders in e-health initiatives in their districts

  16. e-Health ReformsThe Future Direction • National Health & Hospital Reform • Implementation of foundation eMR in GCHSD at Robina Hospital by July 2010 • GCHSD aiming for a ‘paperless’ medical record by late 2012/early 2013 (GCUH opening) • Queensland Health directions with e-Health initatives

  17. Education and Planning • How do health services attract and motivate generation Y with their limited technological uptake? • How do we plan for and educate a modern health information workforce? • What technology can we embrace to assist with HIM issues in the future?

In Conclusion • Expect different HIMs to bring different skill sets, adaptability and communications styles to the HIM team • Recognise that different generations adapt to change in different ways and model change management programs accordingly to allow for generational differences • Tailor education programs and training methods to different generations based on their experiences to optimise training opportunities • Continually adapt to the changing focus of the profession to ensure that HIMs remain a relevant resource in the health care setting no matter which generation a HIM represents
