3. Luke 9:23 and 24 • “Then He said to all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desire to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.’” • Jesus fully intended His death, burial, and resurrection to be carried on in the transforming of his believers from the world of sin to a walk in righteousness. • His resurrection impacts our lives.

4. Near Death Experiences: • Can you think of people that have a had a “wake up call” after a near death experience and changed their lives? • Is that person you? • Is the life that you live now a new kind of life in contrast with the life that you lived before?

5. Revelation 3:14-16 • “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: • These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. Rev 3:15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! Rev 3:16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

6. Matthew 7:13-14 • Mt 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. Mt 7:14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

7. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Page 1799 • Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

8. Matthew 10:32-40: • Mt 10:32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. Mt 10:33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. Mt 10:34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.Mt 10:35 For I have come to turn “ ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— Mt 10:36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

9. Matthew 10:32-40: • Mt 10:37 “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; Mt 10:38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Mt 10:39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Mt 10:40 “He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.

10. Hebrews 10:19-31: • Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

Hebrews 10:19-31: • 23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:19-31: • Heb 10:26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

13. Hebrews 10:19-31: • 29How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

14. 1 Corinthians 6:12-20: • 1Co 6:12“Everything is permissible for me”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 1Co 6:13 “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food”—but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

15. 1 Corinthians 6:12-20: • 1Co 6:14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 1Co 6:15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 1Co 6:16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 1Co 6:17 But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

16. 1 Corinthians 6:12-20: • 1Co 6:18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 1Co 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 1Co 6:20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

17. Luke 9:23-26 • Lk 9:23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Lk 9:24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. Lk 9:25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? Lk 9:26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

18. Romans 6:15-23 • Ro 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Ro 6:16Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

19. Romans 6:15-23 • Ro 6:17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. Ro 6:18You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

20. Romans 6:15-23 • Ro 6:19 I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.

21. Romans 6:15-23 • Ro 6:20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. • Ro 6:21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! Ro 6:22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life

22. Romans 6:23 • Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

23. Ephesians 4:17-5:20 • Eph 4:17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. Eph 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Eph 4:19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. Eph 4:20 You, however, did not come to know Christ that way.

24. Ephesians 4:17-5:20 • Eph 4:21 Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. • Eph 4:22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; Eph 4:23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; Eph 4:24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

25. Ephesians 4:17-5:20 • Eph 4:25Therefore each of you mustput off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. Eph 4:26 “In your anger do not sin” : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, Eph 4:27 and do not give the devil a foothold. Eph 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

Ephesians 4:17-5:20 • Eph 4:29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Eph 4:31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Eph 4:32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

27. Ephesians 4:17-5:20 • Eph 5:1Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children Eph 5:2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

28. Ephesians 4:17-5:20 • Eph 5:3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Eph 5:4Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. Eph 5:5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

29. Ephesians 4:17-5:20 • Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Eph 5:7 Therefore do not be partners with them. Eph 5:8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light Eph 5:9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) Eph 5:10 and find out what pleases the Lord.

30. Ephesians 4:17-5:20 • Eph 5:11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. Eph 5:12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. Eph 5:13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, Eph 5:14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper,rise from the dead,and Christ will shine on you.” Eph 5:15Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,

31. Eph 5:16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Eph 5:17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Eph 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Eph 5:19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, Eph 5:20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Eph 5:21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

32. Luke 17:7-10 • Lk 17:7 “Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Lk 17:8 Would he not rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Lk 17:9 Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? Lk 17:10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’ ”

Philippians 2:12-16 • Phil 2:12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence — continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, Phil 2:13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

Philippians 2:12-16 • Phil 2:14 Do everything without complaining or arguing, Phil 2:15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe Phil 2:16 as you hold out the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

35. Conclusion: • When we commit to following Christ we put ourselves on a path of complete holiness. • “The old has gone and the new has come.” • How different is your life from 6 months ago? • How are you a new creation becoming more like Jesus?

36. Conclusion: • Christ is able to change us if we surrender to the process. • This week consider how Jesus has changed your life from old to new. • If your life is not as changed as you want it to be then take heart. • I am not what I used to be, but I am not yet what I will be, and I celebrate the work of Christ for the truth in the both of these statements. • Next Week: Dead But Not Yet!
