Seamless Summer Option Food Program 2014
Overview • The SSO allows school food authorities (SFAs) to provide free summer meals in low income areas during the traditional summer vacation periods and, for year-round schools, school vacation periods longer than 10 school days. • This option combines features of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP), and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
Participation of SSO • Only SFAs administering the NSLP or SBP may participate in the SSO. However, with State agency approval, SFAs may sponsor non-school feeding sites under SSO • Any Child 18 years of age or younger and those persons over age 18 who meet the State agency’s definition of mentally or physically disabled may receive meals under the SSO free of charge.
Site Eligibility • All summer feeding sites must have at least 50% of the children eligible for free or reduced-price eligible percentages • May expand their summer food service to sponsors of non-school sites operated by other non-profit organizations
Types of Sites • Open sites • Meals available to all children residing in the area • Restricted Open • Security, safety or control • Closed Enrolled • Specific group of children
Types of Sites cont. • Camps • May be residential or non-residential (day camp). • For enrolled children who meet Free and/or Reduce meals • Migrant • Primarily serving children of migrant families through age 18, as certified by a migrant coordinator.
Claims & Reimbursements • Meals served under the SSO are reimbursable at the free rates prescribed by the USDA for the NSLP and SBP.
Program Requirements • SFA must review compliance with: • Meal Counting • Claiming • Menu Planning • Food Safety Requirements • Production Records
New Mexico 2014 Statistics • This year we have 44 school districts participating in SSO • There are 229 sites for this summer • Estimated daily meals state wide • #23,854 breakfasts • #34,870 lunches • #2,400 snacks
