Counselor Role During Course Selection • Flex Presentationsto each grade level • Computers and Counselor Support in commons during lunches from February 24th – March 1st • Academic Advisement • Credit Checks to keep students on track for graduation • Resolve Schedule Conflicts
Graduation Project • Career/Post-Secondary Education Based 4-year project • Specific requirements each year completed via Naviance (page 3) • Grade 9 – requirements completed in Fundamentals of FCS • Grade 10 – Career Fair • Grade 11 – requirements completed in Personal Financial Literacy • Grade 12 – requirements completed in the Fall • Senior CTC Students must complete graduation project via CTC program. • Progress reported by semester or annually on Report Card
Course Scheduling Timeline • HHS students access Curriculum Guide online January • Teachers share course recommendations by Jan. 20 (Sem. 1) Feb.17 (Sem. 2) • Students select courses online Feb. 24 - Mar. 1 • Parents verify student selections March 13-15 • 2017-18 Schedules to students (tentative) May • Last day to request course changes Both Semesters May 19
Curriculum Guide Format • General Information (Pgs. 1-16) - all students/parents should review. • Grade 9 Specific (Pgs. 17-57) • Grade 10-12 Specific (Pgs. 58-144) • Department Course Offerings (list of all courses) followed by Course Descriptions. • Student Course Planning Worksheet (Pg. 60)
Course Selection Specifics • All students in grades 9 -11 should access their Curriculum Guide via the HHS webpage (hard copies available in counseling office and flex). • Core area teachers at the high school will make their recommendations directly in Sapphire by February 22. • If you have questions about courses for which your child is recommended, please contact the teacher, supervisor, or counselor. • Students in grades 9-11 will select elective courses online (directions will be on the district website “links for students” and emailed to student email accounts). Students should be mindful of pre-requisites. • HHS students who do not have computers or Internet access at home will be able to do their on-line selections during lunch, or Thursday evenings in the library.
Course Selection Specifics • All students will receive a course verification sheet in Homeroom on March 13. • Your son/daughter should bring the verification form home for you to review selected courses. A parent signature is then required on the form. • If you wish to override a teacher recommendation, an Override form must be obtained in the guidance office. The Override form must be signed by the parent. • Verifications sheets are to be turned into homeroom teachers, with a parent signature, on or before March 15.
Graduation Requirements • English - 4.0 Credits • Social Studies - 4.0 Credits • Math - 4.0 Credits • Science - 3.0 Credits • PE & Health - 2.0 Credits • Fund. of FCS - 0.5 Credit • Financial Lit. - 0.5 Credit • Arts/Humanities - 2.0 Credits • Electives - Remaining credits to meet graduation requirements • Required Credits to Graduate: 28 Credits.
Scheduling Requirements Students will engage in course work during 4 of the 5 available periods. *** One block will be their Lunch / Flex period • • All .5 credit classes meet on alternating days for one semester. • • Most 1-credit classes meet everyday for one semester (Exceptions - Band, Orchestra, and Chorus – these are full year courses that meet on alternating days.) • • All students will be required to schedule courses so that the credits attempted during the school year = 8.0 credits Exception: - The Senior Option

Summer School Information • Dates • June 12th – 23rd (Fund. of Art / Comm. Tech 1) • June 19th – July 20th (All Others) • Costs • Advanced Credit Classes $275 • Remedial Classes • .5 credit $225 • 1 credit $275
Summer School Information • Taking an advanced credit summer course provides more flexibility in a student’s schedule during the school year but does not guarantee placement in any specific course. • E.g. – Fundamentals of Design in summer school does not guarantee placement in a requested art class.
Rank-in-Class Update • Weighted Exemption Policy (WEP) pg. 6 • Once as a Junior • Once each semester as a Senior • Core required courses are not eligible
Off Campus Options Off Campus OPPORTUNITIES – grades 11 and 12 (pgs. 140-144) •Dual Enrollment - Students travel to area colleges/tech. schools to take up to 2 courses/semester. Dual Enrollment Information Night – March 21 at 6:30 pm in the Hackman Auditorium. •Internships - Students travel to local businesses and professional organizations for the purpose of observing, interacting, and assisting professionals to learn about careers.
Off Campus Options Off Campus OPPORTUNITIES – gr. 11 & gr. 12 (pgs. 140-144) •School to Career - Students travel to work settings and gain entry level employment skills through application of course concepts in a work setting. •College in the HS - Students taking college-level courses that are taught in the high school (through an agreement with HACC).
Open Campus PA • Electives offered can be found on page 2 of the curriculum guide. • Online and Hybrid Classes • Jointly developed classes with Manheim Township and Penn Manor • No Fee for these classes during the school year • Open Campus Website – www.opencampuspa.net • Student Characteristics for Success • Organized, motivated, and good time management
CTC Programs Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (CTC) Opportunities: • Over 50 different shops/programs to choose from • Career Centers located at Mount Joy, Brownstown and Willow Street • Cluster Programs – Grade 11 • Full Day Programs – Grade 12
