  2. Let’s get started! • Is your library ready? • Community need • Staff and facility capacity • Establishing eligibility • Census data • School data – 50% of students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch • Starting point contacts • School Nutrition Director • Food Bank Lunch at the Library

  3. The basics • Prior to start, providers host mandatory training • Summer meal providers (sponsor) deliver meals to library (site) • Library serves meals, completes paperwork, places orders • Count meals received, served, leftovers, etc. • Records temperatures • Ensures meals are eaten on site, by 18 and under only • Follows USDA and health dept. safety regulations Lunch at the Library

  4. Finding a meal provider • Schools are often your best bet…most of the time. • Other ways of finding providers, identifying need: • USDA Capacity Builder https://www.fns.usda.gov/capacitybuilder • CA Department of Education http://www.cde.ca.gov/ds/sh/sn/summersites.asp Lunch at the Library

  5. Speaking Summer Meal Language • Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) & Seamless Summer Feeding Option (SSFO) • Your provider may sound like they are speaking a foreign language – don’t be intimidated • Common misconceptions / different rules • Even if there is a site nearby, your library CAN be a site: Must serve a different population (handstamp, etc.) • Children do NOT need to eat in area separate from parents • Share table Lunch at the Library

  6. Getting off to a good start • Starts with asking the right questions... LunchAtTheLibrary.org > First Steps > Finding and Working with a Meal Provider Lunch at the Library
