  1. E-learning course production process analysis Diplomityöesitelmä Jouni Saarenpää 29.1.2008

  2. Structure in brief • Research questions • E-learning – the background • E-learning product and production • Current process • Results

  3. Research questions • What are the characteristics of the current e-learning solutions? • What are the characteristics of the current e-learning course production processes?

  4. What is e-learning? 1/2 • Defined widely: • Online access to learning resources, anywhere and anytime (Holmes & Gardner, 2006) • Always networked, delivered via standard internet connection, focuses on the whole concept of learning (Rosenberg, 2000) • Learning (Cross, 2004)

  5. What is e-learning? 2/2 • E-learning refers to distance learning with ICT participation in a significant role. The main focus of e-learning is in on-line learning but in this thesis off-line learning is also considered as e-learning.

  6. Benefits and challenges of e-learning • Benefits: • Cost efficient • Fast (also updating) • Global • Challenges • Learning is primarly a social process • Organisation has to promote (e-)learning • Lack of personalisation • Requires self-learning skills

  7. Learning styles of Felder and Silverman (Felder & Silverman, 1988)

  8. E-learning standards and recommendations • IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee • ISO/IEC JTC1 • IMS Global Learning Consortium • Advanced Distributed Learing (ADL) • SCORM

  9. ARCS-model • Attention • Relevance • Confidence • Satisfaction

  10. Define goals + strategy Product cycle Process cycle Refine scenario Yes No Ready for students Field test Revise Refine prototype Evaluate Implementation Upcoming trends • Fast prototyping • Mobile learning

  11. Technical system E-learning technology Hardware System software Manware Orgware E-learning application E-learning content E-learning product

People Content development Content delivery P3-model • People-process-product-continuum Process Delivery & maintenance Design Planning Evaluation Development Learning materials Revised materials Project plan Storyboard Final material Design team Production team Evaluation team Planning team Delivery team Product

  13. Current Process • Process overview • Pre-project activities: contract • Planning: synopsis • Designing: storyboards • Development: pilot course • Delivery: course • Maintenance

  14. Information entities • The project offering • Solution description • Contract • Source material from the customer • Synopsis • Synopsis feedback • Storyboards • Storyboard feedback • Graphics, animations, photos, videos • Pilot product • Pilot feedback • Deliverables (such as the online course, disks etc.)

  17. Use case diagram

  18. Case: process activity diagram

  19. Results • Challenges • E-learning production is a rather complex combination of technology, learning, multimedia production and information technology product development. • The acknowledged obstacle in e-learning production is the information flow between the producer and the customer.

  20. Results • Clearer milestones • the process does not proceed further until all the information needed for the next stage is obtained • Production control system • It seems that the current market has no PCS for a development that is globally distributed and would map well to the e-learning production and all its phases
