  6. Even to the ancient Greeks and Romans, Egypt was an old land. The early Egyptians settled beside the Nile River in Northern Africa sometime before 3000 B.C. Over the years they developed a language, built vast monuments and created great works of art.

  7. Where in the world is Egypt?

  10. Close your eyes and listen while I read you the story of why the ancient Egyptians felt they had to turn dead bodies into mummies and build vast pyramids to put them in.

  11. What is a Sarcophagus? • These protective containers were originally designed to hold the innermost coffin which held the remains of the deceased or mummy. Most commonly these are made of wood or stone and are lavishly decorated with gold and precious jewels, as in the famous sarcophagus of King Tutankhamen.

  12. This upper part of a sarcophagus displays the portrait of a young queen of the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18. The name of the queen was lost when tomb raiders sawed off the lower part of the sarcophagus to make the most marketable part (the mask) easier to transport. Sadly, we will never know her identity and, according to Egyptian beliefs, unless someone pronounces her name, she loses the eternal life she hoped for.

  13. This is a kite made to look like an Egyptian Sarcophagus. Your assignment, is to create a Sarcophagus of your own, in the style of the Egyptian Sarcophagus we have been viewing. You will use a mask form that I will provide. Papier Mache will cover the form, and you will add other embellishments to make it look like you are a king or queen from ancient Egypt. We will paint the surface with gold and other brightly colored paints. You will also paint decorative designs on the body of your sarcophagus, using the ideas you discovered while reading the library books on ancient Egypt.

  14. Use the rest of the period today, to look through the library books on your desks. You may have to share, looking at one book with your neighbor. Look for the different patterns and designs used in the sarcophagi you see. Make a list of colors that you like, that were used by the Egyptians. What will your face look? Will you be a king or a queen? Create a simple sketch showing the additions you will add to your face, to make you look Egyptian.
