  1. Combat Robotics Learn – Build - Battle

  2. Welcome to your new favorite class! You WILL… Learn the science behind robotics Build a combat robot Battle your robot!!!

  3. Katapult Labs Started by Katapult Engineering Mission: to educate the community about Making. Located in the old Dillsburg Library MakeBoxes go out beyond the local community! Check them out!

  4. Jennifer Wolverton Engineering Degree from Michigan State University. Worked at Technicolor, Northrop Grumman, Capital One Creating Algebra Club, an algebra supplement www.LogCabinSchoolhouse.com

  5. Classroom Management • Listen when others are talking. • Follow directions. • Show respect for Katapult Labs. • Work and play in a safe manner. • Work as a TEAM. • Be RESPECTFUL, KIND, and HELPFUL. • Stay seated unless directed otherwise. • DO HARD THINGS. • Find your CREATIVITY. • Give COMPLIMENTS. • Battle your friends, but cheer for both winners and losers of combat. • Put in 100%, Get out 100%.

  6. Careers you will learn about… • Mechanical Engineering • Electrical Engineering • Computers • Process Engineering • Materials Science

  7. Rules of COMBAT! • Be safe at all times. • Robots that don’t follow ALL rules will be disqualified from battle for the rest of the day and potentially the rest of the semester. • All shell construction out of plastics and foams. • Maximum dimension of robot cannot exceed 10" (meaning a square robot cannot have a diagonal dimension of greater than 10". Another way to think of it, the robot must fit inside of a sphere with a 5" radius) • Robots must only be activated in the arena or with permission of instructor. • Robots must weigh in equal or less than 1 pound. • Robots weapons could include: lifters, hammers, clamps, spinning weapons. (No sawing or drilling or fire.) • No autonomous robots. They must all be radio controlled. • All efforts must be made to protect battery terminals from a direct short and causing a battery fire.

  8. Basic Parts of a Robot • Brain • Processor • Sensors • Light • Heat • Sonar • Touch • Software • Functions • Programs • Instructions • Commands • Procedures • Moving Parts • Gears • Motors • Cogs • Actuators • Power • Battery • Oil, Gas • Solar • Electrical • Chemical

  9. Basic Parts of OUR Robot • Brushed DC Motors, 33.3:1 Gearmotors • VEX Motor Controllers • 2.25 OD x0.75 Foam Rubber Wheels • 3mm x 0.75 wide Anodized Aluminum Hubs with Hex Key Set Screw • Power Jack and Plug – safety disconnect with optional charging JST connector • 7.4 Lipoly Battery • Terminal Blocks Lever Nuts • Hex Wrench • Snap Ring Pliers for external snap rings • 2.4 GHz 6 Channel Transmitter (+8AA Batteries) • 2.4 GHz 6 Channel Receiver • Lipoly Battery Charger • 12V Power Supply

  31. WEEK 3 tasks • Introductory BATTLE / 10 minute video of BattleBots / Sign in • Robots from Boston Dynamics • What is an engineer video • Lipo Batteries Video • POP QUIZ! • Draw Basic Parts of a Robot • Draw Basic Circuit • Name the parts of our circuit • Draw OUR Circuit Schematic (with wires) • Kahoot Games • BUILD wire together everything • BATTLE – mombot, sharkbot, and any finished studentbots

  32. QUIZ 1! Draw the 5 Basic Parts of a Robot QUIZ 2! Draw a Basic Circuit with 1 light bulb and 1 battery

  33. Basic Parts of a Robot • Brain • Processor • Sensors • Light • Heat • Sonar • Touch • Software • Functions • Programs • Instructions • Commands • Procedures • Moving Parts • Gears • Motors • Cogs • Actuators • Power • Battery • Oil, Gas • Solar • Electrical • Chemical

  34. Draw a Series and Parallel Circuit A series circuit is one in which there is only one pathway for the electric current to follow. The components are arranged one after another in a single pathway. When we connect the components we say that they are connected in series. We have already seen examples of series circuits in the last chapter. Parallelcircuits offer more than one pathway for the electrons to follow. When constructing a parallel circuit, we say that components are connected in parallel. Look at the diagram which shows how two light bulbs are connected in parallel.

  35. Now we have Simple, Series, and Parallel Circuits

  36. Name the Parts

  37. WEEK 4 tasks • Introductory BATTLE / 10 minute video of BattleBots / Sign in • Elements Vocabulary Video • POP QUIZ! • Draw Basic Parts of a Robot • Draw three types of Circuit • Name the parts of our circuit • Draw OUR Circuit Schematic (with wires) • Ohm’s Law • Video • Activity • Create the Simple, Series, and Parallel circuits in PHeD • Click on “Physics” under PHeT Collection • Then click “Circuit Construction Kit (AC DC)” • Build a Simple, Series, and Parallel Circuit at home • BUILD complete wiring and begin to discuss aesthetics and add-ons • Discuss Katapult Labs MakerNight Calendar • BATTLE – MomBot, SharkBot, WedgeBot, TeenBot, and any finished StudentBots

  38. AT HOME… • Create the Simple, Series, and Parallel circuits in PhET • Click on “Physics” under PHeT Collection • Then click “Circuit Construction Kit (AC DC)” • Build a Simple, Series, and Parallel Circuit at home
