The State of Education • Current event(s) • Waiting for Superman • Education Nation (NBC) • President Obama (September 27, 2010) • Change and reform takes time • We have to do more with less • Looking for laboratories and cultures of excellence • Must focus on Math and Science • Currently ranked 21st in Science and 25th in Math • Teachers feel discouraged and need more support • There is not a more important profession than teaching for the recovery of this economy • Advocates for longer and more school days • Currently go to school 1 month less than all other industrial nations

VISION It is our vision to be the pinnacle of knowledge, character, ethics, and community building. • Teach children to be cognitive, analytical, creative and enthusiastic lifelong learners. • Teachers are role-models for their students. • Parents are role-models for their children. • Senior students are role-models for younger ones.

DEMOGRAPHICS • 2nd year in Coppell • K-6th grades, add a grade each year until 8th • 360 students enrolled • 45% Free and Reduced • 30% White, 30% Black, 30% Asian, 10% Other • Over 15 different languages spoken by students at home • Over 50% ESL • From 8 different districts (Irving, Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Coppell, Lewisville, Hurst/Euless/Bedford, Arlington, Grapevine-Colleyville, Dallas)

How does Manara compare to other charter districts/schools? • Only two in entire DFW area that is comparable in size, Free and Reduced numbers and type: • St. Anthony School (288 students, 59% F/R) • 3rd: 91% Reading, 80% Math • 4th: 84% Reading, 100% Math, 97% Reading • 5th: 95% Reading, 95% Math, 85% Science • KIPP Truth Academy (264 students, 58% F/R) • Serves 5-8th grades • 81% Reading • 83% Math • 77% Science
