Hazleton • The population was 25,340 according to the 2010 census which is a 8.6% from the 2000 census. • The city of Hazleton along with its surrounding areas are known as Greater Hazleton. • Southern Luzerne County, northern Schuylkill County, and northern Carbon County are all part of Greater Hazleton • The population of Greater Hazleton was 80,351 according to the 2000 census. • Greater Hazleton includes 10 boroughs, 5 townships, and 36 smaller towns. Help From coal • Hazleton gained attention from railroad developers from Philadelphia because there were anthracite coal deposits near the borough of Beaver Meadows. • Ariovistus Pardee incorporated the Hazleton Coal Company in 1836. • The Hazleton Coal Company built the first school on Church Street, where the Hazleton City Hall is now located. First High School City Hall on Church St.

Facts • On January 5, 1857, Hazleton was incorporated as a borough. • The name was suppose to be spelled “Hazelton,” but a clerk misspelled the name while incorporating the borough and it stayed as “Hazleton.” • The Pioneer Fire Company was the first fire company organized in 1867 by soldiers who came back from the American Civil War. • On December 4, 1891, the population reached up to 14,000 people and was incorporated as a city. • In that same year, Hazleton was the 3rd city in the United States to have a city-wide electric grid. • During the 1900s, many local leaders tried to improve Hazleton, but the economy was declining causing many stores to close down.

  8. Hazleton Area High School • Hazleton Area High School was established in 1992. • The population comes from three former high schools located in Hazleton, West Hazleton, and Freeland.

  9. Hazleton Area Cougars Herman Geist Stadium with the Hazleton Cougars • Football and Basketball are the two • main sports in the Hazleton area allowing • people to get involved with the youth and • show support. Hazleton Area High School Indoor Basketball Court

  10. Knoebels Amusement park • Knoebels is a very popular destination during the summer for people who live in Hazleton located in Elysburg, Pa.
