Generic Gabapentin tablets areconsidered to be less expensive than the brand-name tablet. Few brand-names are Gralise, Neurontin, and Horizant. It can be taken as an immediate-release oral tablet, an oral solution, or an extended-release oral tablet. It is used to prevent seizures in adults and children above 2 years of age, and postherpetic neuralgia, a pain caused by shingles, a painful rash. Gabapentin comes in the form of oral capsules and strength of three types that are gabapentin 100mg, Gabapentin 300mg, and Gabapentin 400mg. For postherpetic neuralgia: Day 1: start with Gabapentin 300mg. Day 2: take Gabapentin600mg (300mg twice). Day 3: take 300mg thrice a day. Maximum dosage(under doctor’s consultation): 1800mg (if Gabapentin 600mg taken thrice). For seizures: Children of age 3-11 years: 12-15mg/day per kg of weight in three doses. Maximum dosage: 50mg/kg a day. Children of age 12-17 years: take gabapentin 300mg thrice a day. Later can be increased to 2700-3600mg, only if the doctor suggests. Adults of age 18-64 years: a total of 900mg/day. Later can be increased to 2700-3600mg, only if the doctor suggests. Gabapentin tablets must not be given to children of age below 3. For adults of age above 64, it is suggested to take Gabapentin slowly as kidney functioning is reduced. Important warnings of Gabapentin tablets ● It can cause drowsiness due to slow thinking and motor skills, so avoid driving. ● If you are allergic to it, you can come across symptoms of hives, rash, difficulty in breathing, and swelling of throat and tongue. ● Pregnant and breastfeeding women must avoid it. ● In severe conditions, it causes multi-organ hypersensitivity. ● Avoid alcohol consumption.
