  1. Getting Pregnant with Low Sperm Count

  2. Getting Pregnant with Low Sperm Count The sperm count of a male plays a vital role in his being able to make his partner pregnant. A good sperm count is between 40 million to 300 million sperms per milliliter of semen. Most men have a variable sperm count from day to day but it remains within a limited range. If the sperm count is lower than 15 million it is considered a low sperm count for pregnancy. A low sperm count is called oligospermia. This is a condition of male infertility. A man with a low sperm count is usually not able to make a woman pregnant naturally. However, in rare cases, he just might be successful in making his partner pregnant. But these cases are few and far and one shouldn’t count on it as a possibility in their case. What is the role of sperm count on fertility one may wonder? After all 15 million is not a small number and all that is required in the end is just one sperm. Today many males suffer from low sperm count and there are several reasons responsible for it. Life style is the one aspect that greatly influences our overall health and this includes reproductive health as well as fertility. There are several factors related to the sperm that has an impact on pregnancy. It is the overall quality of the sperm that matters not just the sperm count. The sperm motility and sperm morphology plays an equally important role in male fertility and conception on the whole.

  3. Getting Pregnant with Low Sperm Count Sperm motility is the ability of the sperm to swim or move about. A male with good sperm motility, is highly likely to be able to impregnate his partner even with a low sperm count. It is important for the sperm to be able to reach the egg. It is also imperative that he have good sperm morphology. This is the shape of the sperm. Abnormally shaped sperm cannot penetrate an egg even if the sperm is able to reach the egg with good sperm motility. Poor sperm morphology is another reason for male infertility. Assisted Reproductive Treatment has a number of fertility options to help a woman get pregnant if her partner has low sperm count. The most common treatment recommended for couples with low sperm count is the intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment. IUI is a procedure in which the male partner gives a sperm sample at a fertility clinic. This is washed to remove the excess semen which may inhibit the sperms movement. The inactive weak sperms are also removed. The sperm sample is then injected directly into the female partner’s uterus during her ovulation cycle. The reason for this is to put the sperm closer to the egg. The distance the sperms need to travel is reduced and they only have to make a short journey from the uterus to the fallopian tubes.

  4. Getting Pregnant with Low Sperm Count In a normal case the number of sperm that reaches the uterus is limited. With the IUI procedure of injecting the sperm into the uterus, there are more sperm closer to the fallopian tubes. This increases the probability of a sperm being able to impregnate the egg during the ovulation window, which is the fertility period of the female partner. A woman’s fertility period is limited to about 24 hours and hence the sperm need to act fast or they will miss the chance of fertilising the egg. Very often the sperm are not able to penetrate the tough outer covering of the egg. This could be due to the weakness of the sperm. When the IUI procedure is repeatedly unsuccessful then the fertility doctor usually suggests ICSI treatment. The Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a procedure in which the sperm is directly injected into the egg. For this treatment the mature egg is extracted from the female partner. The embryologist then selects one healthy active sperm and injects it directly into the female egg. The only job the sperm now has, is to fertilise the egg. The ICSI treatment is used in cases of severe male infertility when the sperm is not able to penetrate the egg by itself. This treatment is becoming a popular part of the IVF procedure due to increase in male infertility in India.
