  1. Know more about various medical surgical accessories for patient care. About intravenous catheter There are few things that children hate more than getting needle sticks, and it is common for those who suffer from cancer to endure it many times to have blood drawn, to be given drugs for chemotherapy and other medications, or to receive blood or fluid transfusions. In order to avoid repeated punctures in a vein, the doctor may recommend the placement of an Intravenous Catheter. This catheter is a surgically inserted cannula that allows doctors to administer medications and other fluids intravenously (IV), in addition to drawing blood. A catheter can be helpful to eliminate some of the stress associated with the treatment and prevent the deterioration of children's veins due to frequent punctures. In addition, it can remain in the body for as long as it is medically necessary. Types of catheters External routes: The catheter that remains outside the body may have one or two smaller cannulas connected (known as lumens), each with plugs at their ends. Medications that are injected into the cap go directly into the vein. Subcutaneous routes: Usually, a route that is implanted completely under the skin is known as a port-a-cath or medi-port catheter (implantable catheters). These lines are usually placed on the chest, but sometimes they can be placed on the arm. One end of the thin catheter is inserted into a large caliber vein, while the other reaches a rubber cap, or entry portal, just below the skin. When medications or other treatments are given, a special needle with an Intravenous Cannula attached is inserted through the skin into the port. Although this method of port access still requires the use of a needle, it is usually easier and less painful than a typical puncture. A cream can be applied to numb the skin in order to reduce discomfort. Care of catheters Both types of routes are implanted in an operating room while the patient is under general anesthesia, and subsequently both require some care at home. The External routes catheters and 3 Way Stopcock need more attention than the implantable catheters (port-a-cath), because the cannula remains outside the body. To avoid infection, the bandage around the entrance of the road should be changed several times a week. If your child has a fever (a clear sign of infection), notify the health care provider immediately.
