Coding and reimbursement Medicaid and Medicare Part B cover cessation counseling for patients with medical condition caused by or medication impacted by tobacco use (2 attempts x 4 sessions each/yr) To get reimbursed for symptomatic patients, use: • appropriate E/M code for the visit with modifier 25 attached • Tobacco Cessation Counseling Code • 99406 Intermediate visit 3 -10 minutes • 99407 Intensive visit >10 minutes • Diagnosis codes • Report 305.1 Tobacco use disorder AND related condition or interference with medication • Example: 493.9 Asthma

  2. Coding and reimbursement (cont.) To get reimbursed for asymptomatic patients, use: • Tobacco Cessation Counseling Code • G0436 Intermediate visit 3 -10 minutes • G0437 Intensive visit >10 minutes • Diagnosis codes • 305.1 Tobacco use disorder • Patients will incur no out of pocket expenses.
