First country to sign the Convention on Biological Diversity and largest country in South America, Brazil is the most biologically diverse nation in the world with six terrestrial biomes: • Amazon (tropical rainforest) • Atlantic Forest (coastlineforest) • Caatinga (semi-arid) • Cerrado (savanna) • Pampas (flat grasslands) • Pantanal (wetlands)

  5. Brazil has a diversity of coastal and marine ecosystems distributed in approximately 4.5 million km2, which include extensive mangroves and coral reefs.

  6. At least 103,870 animal species and 43,020 plant speciesare currently known in Brazil.

  8. At the tabling of TEEB’s final Report suite at CBD’s COP-10in Nagoya, Japan, several governments, including Brazil, expressed their interest to launch country level TEEB projects

  9. The purpose of TEEB Brazil is to identify and highlight the economic benefits derived from the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the country, as to evaluate the costs of their losses

  10. TEEB Brazil aims to disseminate tools to comprise these benefits and costs to the processes of decision making in the public, private and civil society.

TEEB Brazilis a joint initiative between the Ministry of the Environment and: • CI • Institute of Applied Economic Research • (GovenmentEconomics • thinktank) United Nations Environment Program Conservation International • IPEA • PNUMA German Cooperation Agency InternationalUnion for Conservation ofNature Ministryof Finance • MF • GIZ • IUCN

  12. TEEB Brazil comprehends on four components:

TEEB Brazil TEEB for National Policymakers • TEEB for Business Sector • TEEB for citizens • TEEB for Regional and Local Policy Makers Attempts to demonstrate the value of ecosystems and biodiversity to selected sectors of the economy, hence to recommend a set of federal policy actions Aims to assess the risks and costs of biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and opportunities associated with its conservation and sustainable use, for selected Brazilian companies and business sectors Aims to transmit didactically the main results of the studies to the society through multimedia strategy. Aims to provide practical guidance on how to deal with the challenge of biodiversity loss at local and regional levels
