2. William Shakespeare • Born: April the 26th, 1564 • Parents: John Shakespeare (town official of Stratford; dabbled in tanning, leatherwork and whittawering - working with white leather, such as purses and gloves); Mary Arden (inherited much of her father’s landowning and farming) • Death: April the 23rd, 1616

3. His Marriage • November the 28th, 1582, an eighteen year old William married the twenty-six and pregnant Anne Hathaway. Barely seven months later, they had his first daughter, Susanna. Anne never left Stratford, living there her entire life.

4. The Lost Years • Looking for work in London, just four days ride way from Stratford, William is believed to have left his family back home for some twenty years whilst he pursued his craft. • He only returned to his family in 1609, having visited only during the forty day period of Lent when theatres would later close in accordance with the traditional banning of all forms of diversionary entertainment around this important Easter event.

5. Plays • 37 plays and 154 sonnets – proof does show that he did actually write these, although some argue that he didn’t (sonnets are poems) • Some plays include: Romeo and Juliet Henry V King Lear A Midsummer Night’s Dream Taming of the Shrew Macbeth Hamlet

6. His Epitaph • Words on his tombstone: Good friend, for Jesus´ sake forbeare To digg the dust enclosed here! Blest be ye man that spares thes stones And curst be he that moues my bones. (Good friend, for Jesus’ sake, forbear To dig the dust enclosed here; Blest be the man that spares these stones And curst he that moves my bones.)

7. The Globe Theatre • The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by the playing company to which Shakespeare belonged, and destroyed by fire on June 29, 1613 • The Globe Theatre that was rebuilt by June 1614 and closed in 1642
