  2. The Purpose of CfE is to … • Develop a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum from 3 to 18 wherever learning is taking place, whether in schools, colleges or other settings.

  3. The Curriculum Definition “The curriculum is the totality of experiences and learning outcomes which are planned for children and young people through their education, wherever they are being educated.” [Building the Curriculum 3]

  4. Definitions • ‘Learning Outcomes’ set out what the child or young person will be able to explain, apply or demonstrate • Experiences refer to the quality and nature of the learning experience in developing attributes and capabilities in our young people and promotes active engagement, motivation and depth of learning.

  5. Five Levels of Outcomes & Experiences

  6. Curriculum Areas Outcomes and Experiences are grouped in the following curriculum areas: Science Languages Mathematics Social Studies Expressive Arts Health & Wellbeing Religious & Moral Education Technology

  8. The Principle of a Broad and General Education in S1 to S3 • All pupils are expected to achieve all learning outcomes and experiences up to and including Level 3 by the end of S3 across all curriculum areas.

BHS CfE Curriculum Model • S1 CfE integrated courses [based on the Learning Outcomes and Experiences of CfE levels 2 & 3] • S2 – S3 CfE courses based on Learning Outcomes and Experiences of CfE levels 3 & 4 • S4 – S6 National 4, National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher and the Scottish Baccalaureate for Science and Languages

The benefits of S1 Options… • an avoidance of the S2 momentum dip • an increase in pace and challenge • maintaining the principle of a broad and general education ensuring an enriched experience • maintaining discrete subjects which prepares the student for the Senior Phase • An opportunity for students to explore a particular interest in a given curriculum area
