Proposed Normative Text ChangesConcerning QoS IBSS Author: Matthew Sherman AT&T Labs - Research mjsherman@att.com Date: May 12, 2003 Matthew Sherman, AT&T Labs
Purpose • Prevent malicious use of EDCF in IBSS Matthew Sherman, AT&T Labs
Background • Existing DCF solutions restrict user parameters selections so that reasonable behavior results in most situations • Existing EDCF solutions allow that EDCF parameters may be set to any value for a station – even if not reasonable • Need to protect the user from himself (and each other Matthew Sherman, AT&T Labs
Background (2) • One malicious user could bring down entire network by choosing unreasonable setting • Should encourage station designs to not permit users to adjust EDCF parameters • Force to receive setting from QAP • Further safeguards may be desired in AP • Infers that should not be able to use EDCF in IBSS or BSS since need QAP Matthew Sherman, AT&T Labs
Market Impact • Reliable use of medium is key to 802.11 success • While non-802.11 complaint use of license free bands is allowed, should not be encouraged • Eg. Use of EDCF in BSS • Vendors need to police themselves to ensure malicious use of their designs is not allowed • Otherwise if malicious use of medium becomes common will limit growth of 802.11 for many applications Matthew Sherman, AT&T Labs
Motion • To adopt the changes identified in document #03/WWWr0 into the current TGe Draft Matthew Sherman, AT&T Labs
