What is a Tolerance? • A tolerance is a specification found on a technical drawing that allows deviation in size from the nominal dimension • Tolerances are ALWAYS required because nothing can be made perfect all of the time • Picture a car that was made without tolerances………(think Chevy)
Incorrect Tolerances cause problems! Assume the Bearing Housings are in a Fixed Position, and think what if….. the distance between the shoulders on the shaft is too long? Too short? the shaft ends were a heavy press fit in the bearing? Loose Running fit? the bores in the bearing housings are too small or big? the location of the bearing housing bores from the mounting surface is not the same?
Applying these concepts in Manufacturing Class • Understand how various parts in an assembly must work together • Work Top-Down (Start at Assembly first) • Understand the differences between the types of fits before adding tolerances to your drawings • ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT
