  1. Today this can be forestry

  2. Today this can be forest planning

  3. In the UK this can be a forest

  4. And so can this

  5. The maze of trees I’m confused. I’m lost as to which way to turn - who to turn to. Before, everything seemed so clear. Now, which way to turn, which path to follow? Help me, please somebody show me the way.

  6. Forests and Human Health • Mental health benefits • Physical health benefits • Pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals • Forest food and herbs • Infectious and respiratory diseases http://www.iufro.org/

  7. COST E39 Summary, Research Needs: • Economic value & Cost-Benefit Analysis • Understand mechanisms • Differential nature of benefits • Catalogue existing studies • Common theoretical frameworks • Common approaches to evaluation • A high-quality peer-reviewed journal

  8. Some principles It isn’t about forests or nature, it’s about health We don’t promote forests above other open spaces It isn’t possible for one organisation to lead We can’t control what happens, only influence it Partnerships are crucial Mutual learning is crucial Partners are entitled to promote themselves independently of others

  9. Improving health of staff, patients and communities through use of NHS land. • Greening the NHS Estates • Encouraging greater social cohesion between the NHS Estates and the local community. • Encourage the NHS to ensure environmental benefits of their estates. • Bringing together skilled professionals to produce woodland that includes the use of art, food crops and mapping. www.nhsforest.org

  10. COST E39 Summary, Research Needs:Economic value • European forests appear to be an important asset for health, the economic value of which has not been understood in health policy or in forest policy. Forests are accessible to the public and can be used to benefit health at little or no cost to the individual or to the public purse.

  11. COST E39 Summary, Research Needs:Cost-Benefit Analysis • There is suggestive evidence of substantial economic benefits arising from lower rates of illness and a reduced requirement for medical interventions. Because of the potential scale of the savings a concerted, Europe-wide effort to understand the costs and benefits is called for. The current scale of research is disproportionately small relative to the potential public benefit.

  12. COST E39 Summary, Research Needs:Differential nature of benefits • There are highly positivedifferential benefits where less mobile groups such as children, the elderly, disabled people and poor people are likely to gain particular benefit from policies that promote local greenspace and woodlands as a resource for health and fitness.

  13. COST E39 Summary, Research Needs:Understand mechanisms • A more persuasive evidence base is needed on the links between natural outdoor environments and human health and wellbeing. Studies should investigate the mechanisms at work, and look at effects for different target groups.

  14. COST E39 Summary, Research Needs: A catalogue of existing studies • New research should be based on a more comprehensive catalogue of existing studies. Substantial research has been carried out, but it is widely dispersed. Findings need to be cross-referenced, for example, against other health care and epidemiological research.

  15. COST E39 Summary, Research Needs:Common theoretical frameworks • Future research requires common theoretical frameworks and more robust methodologies. Some high quality studies now exist, but broader application of more rigorous methods will lead to greater acceptance in medical and related fields. Common frameworks, definitions and methodologies will enable cross-border comparisons.

  16. COST E39 Summary, Research Needs:A new journal • European research on nature and health is increasing rapidly but its multi-disciplinary nature reduces its visibility and impact. It is reported in several different areas of scientific literature and there is a case for establishing a high-quality journal to bring such research together in one place.

  17. Activities in the UK • The NHS Forest 1) Hospital grounds 2) Patient donations • Health Liaison Officers in Forests • Outdoor Health Network – Research, Policy and Practice • Outdoor Health Forum – NGOs, Agencies, Gmnt • Children in the outdoors • Evidence-based approaches to practice and policy • Art in the outdoors conference, June • Common Approaches to Evaluation • Volunteering – community and corporate • New research programme on physical activity in the outdoors
